Short afternoon hike from Peppersaucey Campground up Peppersauce Canyon and a side canyon to the Mary West Mine. Water in the creeks, some snow in shady areas. The canyon received only a mosaic burn from the Bighorn Fire, mostly on higher portions above the canyon itself. Looks decent for the most part. The Mary West Mine ore bin survived. Nice to see this area again.

We took the buggy for another trip, still breaking in the diffs for an upcoming event my hubby will be participating in. Good company, tons of fun, saw lots of deer. We went up one canyon, ended up on the Arizona trail, then turned around and headed for Peppersauce Campground. We went past it, past the cave (three cars parked there), and took another road that turned back toward Mount Lemmon. This loop brought us back down the Rice Peak road, which originates from Peppersauce Campground. Great loop, kinda gnarly, gave the buggy a good workout. We stopped on the Rice Peak road at a pull off that's across from a huge area we like to glass for deer. We cooked bratwursts on the grill and I glassed for deer (found some, too!). This pull off is about 4 or so miles from Peppersauce Campground, and there was BEAR SCAT there! Yep, there's bears up there! Apparently the one we saw last year is still hanging around. No pics of it, but lots of sign.

Awesome day! :y:

What a blast! Great way to get out of the summer heat. We went from the main entrance all the way back to the main lake (wow!), then we went off to the west of the Big Room after squeezing through a tiny opening and went all the way back to the Library, or "Sign In" room, where the sign in notebook is. Currently it is marked with spray paint on the wall "SIGN IN". We didn't go any farther than that room, which was probably another 600 feet west of the Big Room.

The water in the lake was probably in the 60s, I thought seriously about going for a swim, but didn't want to be at a disadvantage for the rest of the trip by walking around soaking wet.

Thanks so much to the 3 who helped lead us back beyond the Big Room to the Sign-In Room. We never would have even tried to go that far on our own! The guy leading us was from Tucson, with a friend from Texas and another from (of all places), my hometown of Augusta, Georgia, who was here visiting. She even knew where the town was where my parents live nearly an hour away, with a population of 200. Small world!!

We did get fairly nasty, but we never had to wade through any mud where we went. The tiny opening west of the Great Room (known as The love-nest by local spelunkers) did make you get ankle deep in muddy water while squeezing through. When I got home I took my clothes and my shoes and just tossed them in the dumpster!

It was cooler inside than outside, I'm guessing in the 70s, but with the humidity in there it felt like it was in the 80s there in places.
