| no partners | | One more triplog for a short hike in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, then I'll post triplogs for the longer dayhikes. This one takes off from the Painted Canyon Visitor Center, which is a rest area off I-94. It's also the most visited area of the park. Most people don't get off the interstate and into the park proper, they just snap a few pictures from the overlook and keep going. That's a shame, as there's a whole world off the mesa waiting to be explored. This trail offers the quickest descent off the mesa, circles quickly through a well-shaded section of badlands, then climbs steeply back to the overlook.
The best time of day to be on the mesa is morning when the sun illuminates the badlands. I also watched the sunset from the overlook, while cooking dinner at the picnic tables. This was the last hike I did at the park, a quick loop before shuttling back to Bismarck to catch my flight. |
