I started from the north end of FR10 and took a horse trail to the west. I saw this trail labeled on Trailforks as possibly a continuation of the Bush Trail, but I'm not sure. I took this trail until it faded away and then followed a wash southbound. Once it got too shallow and choked, I got out and found another horse trail. I kept southbound until I found a dirt road and took that back to FR10, completing a loop. I'm not sure if the road I found at first was FR3554, but eventually it became that road or met it somewhere. Didn't see any other hikers, bikers or horse riders. I saw 2 quail hunters on FR3554 and then some ATV riders on FR10.

This turned out to be a nicer hike than I expected. The off trail parts were pretty easy to hike and it was easy enough to find the actual horse trails. The higher up you get as you go farther south the views get much nicer. Weather was warmer than it's been, but still very mild.

Expectations were low for this hike so I was not disappointed, warmest day of the year so of course I’m on an ATV track with no shade, tread was soft sand like walking on the beach. Glad for the nice wide “trail” , after reading triplogs by Gummo did not realize this route was snake central, only saw one nonvenomous sunning itself. Few poppies and lupine, now seeing flowers on the hedgehogs and thistles. After paralleling FR 10 for a ways decided to turn around before making the actual junction .Did some policing on the return , was able to fit quite a bit of trash in a large polar pop cup. No other hikers ,passed by a convoy of 6 ATV’s. Besides the trailers at the trailhead only 2 other vehicles.

I set out from the FR10 South Entrance trailhead to hike the Bulldog Canyon Loop official route clockwise, which I did with some variations. I hiked a bit down canyon when I hit the canyon, then retraced my steps to head up canyon. I continued up canyon into Bulldog Wash beyond the loop turn-off and then hiked cross-country to eventually join back up with the Official Route. While off trail, I saw three deer, including a very nice buck. I saw a few ORVS, two of which were going to head down the canyon until they saw me and decided to stay on the road. There were pools of water in various places in the lower canyon, but nothing was flowing.

I haven't had too much luck finding snakes this year. Ii really have no one to blame for it, except you guys. :x Seriously, I often base my snake finding skills based on some of your photosets. If see snakes are being found often in a certain area, I will go and check it out, but few folks are posting snake photos this year due to the drought. It's sad.

Overall, 2018 has been good to me I need to step it up this summer. I'm off to see the mom in Florida next week and then planning a trip to Uganda in October, so if anyone has been to Uganda and knows something that I need to know before I go, I would appreciate it.

A solid day of snaking. I found 3 snakes, one was under some fiberglass. I also rescued a whiptail from a beer can. I'm terrible with video recording, but here's the video of the lizard that was trapped in the can.

I had a great time snaking today. I checked my boards and found what you see in the photoset. Unfortunately, someone was snooping around my other boarding spot and didn't put the boards back. Probably one of you guys trying to steal my thunder. :x

Luckily that board line doesn't produce much of anything, so I wasn't too worried, but still, I'm going to find out who it was and give their HAZ profile a nasty yelp review.

Anyway, my car is out of the shop (someone backed into it), so I'll be going to Joshua Tree NP this weekend, and then I have a date with this chica on Sunday (more snakes = more dates). She only speaks Spanish, so I have to learn Spanish in 4 days. : rambo :

I really like hiking ridges, and this didn't disappoint. Walked down FR 3554 about 3 miles, then headed for the low saddle. The ridge was fun, nothing too difficult. It took a little over an hour to reach 3554 again at the end of the ridge. Took a wash much of the way back, which was a nice shortcut to some of 3554 and its OHV traffic. This is covered by "3C2" in Ted Tenny's book, although his path starts farther South than I did.

A more scenic hike than I expected. A green, grassy desert from recent rains helped. Saw a small herd of wild horses by Lone Mountain.

My Girlfriend's dad got a new-to-him truck and he wanted to test out the 4wd, he is more of a pavement pounder. My go to spot for newbies is Bulldog Canyon. Its easy, close to home and the views are great. We went in on FR3554 and then came out on FR10 at wolverine pass. Its a nice route. I was out here about a year ago and FR10 had been recently graded which is no fun, but today it was getting back to its old ways. Not much traffic, ran across a few campers.

I returned to FR3554 to up my snake count and help solidify my place the Herping Hall Of Fame, which I assume will be in the works soon. Until then, we'll all have to patiently wait. :|

Anyway, I didn't find much but found a little sand snake rumbling in the sticks, which is a sweet score. :D I didn't see much of anything else. I did wander upon a coachwhip, my 30th of the year. I may be scared off another coachwhip in the shrubs, but I wasn't sure.

I'm still not seeing any baby dbacks. I'm guessing that they are not out and about in that area or I'll have to go at night.

My goal today was to find newborn dbacks. Tis the season : rein : But I didn't find any. :( I spotted a few other baby snakes and a nice adult coachwhip. I posed him on a cactus (his idea, not mine) to get some glamour shots for his portfolio.

Afterwards, I did a little flipping and flipped a pillow and found a dback and a gopher snake with a scorpion resting by it. Quite the day... 8)

Looked for snakes, worked out at the gym, went on a lunch date, then went to work. She said that she didn't like snakes. I took that as a challenge.

Finding Rock Faces in the Goldfield Mountains

Angela (tibber) emailed me with the opportunity to join her and Ambika (desertgirl) on a Sunday hike into the (Trails with no names) Goldfield Mountains. It would be easy to fall in love with these mountains if (A) the trails had names that would relate to maps, and (B) the mountains had names. The tallest mountain in the area is 3,269 ft Dome Mountain and, by default, is therefore the only local landmark to guide you through the mazes of Jeep/ATV/Horse trails that seem to go everywhere. Occasionally you get distant views of Superstition Mountain and Weavers Needle as an aid to maintaining your orientation.

We departed the gated (that's an understatement)Trailhead to chilly morning temps and a fairly strong breeze and followed Angela on down the nameless trails. We had an Oops moment ](*,) as Angela spotted a face-in-the-rock landmark that turned out to be a false lead but we got lots of photos of it anyway. Soon she spotted a cairn that led us from the wash, up the steep hillside, following more cairns, until up at an unnamed saddle, was a rock ridge that had a window and an arch, some great views of Dome Mountain and more views of the surrounding Goldfields. The arch had a 12' Saguaro growing almost through the top of the arc :o (a very unusual and interesting formation). We burned lots of pixels hanging around there so it's well documented.

Then it was back down the steep slope to the wash where we continued following the Jeep/ATV/Horse trails. We found some interesting and colorful bedrock formations in the Bulldog Canyon Wash and came across some really 8) camping locations.... one with an impressive firepit with seating around it. The trails finally led us up some steep slopes to massive rock formations with deep canyons, caves and more rock faces where we took a super scenic lunch break  Following lunch we had to work our way down some steep narrow trails with lots of loose ball bearing pebbles that led us back to the trailhead parking lot.

The day was much warmer now as we sat back and enjoyed a cold brew that Angela had packed along while packing away our gear and reminiscing the day's adventure. Maybe someday the Jeeps and ATV's will be banned because of the damage they do to the fragile desert environment and the trash they leave behind them but until that day, it's still a pleasant place to hike. Thanks Angela and Ambika for allowing me to tag along :y:

Started out to do Pass Mountain Loop from Usery Pass Road but heard a dog howling as though in pain somewhere to the northeast. Having seen a sign for a lost dog at the fence-line we wondered if it might be the same dog.

By time we were about to turn south on Pass Mountain Trail (we were going clockwise) the howling had continued long enough we thought we'd go check it out. So we dropped down off the trail and headed over hill and dale on the way to where we heard the howling.

As we crossed FR3354 we noticed some large dog tracks as well as LARGE cat tracks among them. As odd as it seemed, upon closer inspection, the largest prints definitely appeared to be cat. If in fact the dog had been attacked by a mountain lion, Tracey wanted no part of this... and since we were planning on a leisurely hike I didn't have my regular pack, and thus no K-bar knife if it came to that.

After about a mile of hiking toward the area of the howling we no longer heard anything so we planned to go to one last saddle and scan the area from there. We reached the saddle and Tracey blew her whistle a number of times but heard no response so decided to stop for a snack break. If we heard nothing more, we would head back.

Just about time to head back we heard two dogs howling now... and by the direction and sound, we figured they were quite some distance toward the Blue Point gate to Bulldog, and they may be from one of the number of folks camped out there. Ok, who knows if that was true or not, at least we (or Tracey anyway, I'd been out there before) had covered new ground.

A bit different day than we planned, but fun just the same.

Xavier and I got permits for the OHV area and decided to check it out. I took my Jeep and he took his truck we covered from the Usery Pass Road gate to the Wolveriene gate. Lots of great car camp spots and nice views it was not to busy for a Saturday. Next time I am going to have to drag Grasshopper along.
