Finding and then staying on the 101 trail was a bit puzzling. We drove past the parking lot for the 102 trailhead then kept driving until we hit a fence (about 1 mile from where the road turned to dirt). Beyond the fence the road was too rough and muddy for my passenger car so we started biking. To get to the 101 you have to bear right at the first fork and stay straight at 2 different T intersections that come in from the right and left. A little more than 1 mile from the gate the jeep trail turns into a single track and heads down the mountain. Its really rough and we ended up walking our bikes for a good part of it. The trail fades in and out a bit. You will lose the track when the trail flattens out at the top of a ridge after the first descent; you just have to stay on the left of the ridge to find it again. The single track eventually turns back into a rocky jeep track and you can follow it down to the power lines if you want. We just rode along the power lines and then hung a right to cross the cow pasture to my development.
All in all our gps track was 8+ miles, but some of that was diversions and such. Took about 2.5 hours. The 2 mile 1 way would apply to the rough section of single-track from the start of the 101 to the bottom where the water tanks are (the last 0.5 mile or so is jeep track).
When we had just picked up the trail after the flat bit we met some dirt bikers (the ones that have engines) that were riding their bikes up the rock ridden track that we were walking ours down. We didn't think anyone would be on that bit of the trail but us, much less riding up it. At the bottom by the powerlines (where its all jeep track) we met a few off roaders and hunters.
Its a great, secluded hike if you just do the 101 bit down the side of mingus. There is a skanky pond at the top of the mountain and a couple 50 - 100 gallon tanks at the bottom with water (although not sure if this is reliable). |

Autumn Foliage Observation Light Oaks were starting to turn a shade of yellow on the side of the mountain, a nice touch. |
