This is a family trip (actually celebrating an anniversary…I forget which one….joking ) and among other things we always try to find a hike we can do together. This can be a challenge because of the “Goldilocks Syndrome”. The temps and the trails have to be juuuuusssttttttt right for the wife. We first attempted to do the Scenic Trail which turned out to have more snow than “we” wanted to deal with. So we decided to drop down a few thousand feet and do the Fitness Trail. This was an in city trail with minimal elevation and mileage (and no snow). Perfect for the wife and a new trail for me. We were a little unsure if the trail was an even open. There was signage saying they were in the middle of a controlled burn. We checked with the nearby Ranger Station and they said the burn was over with and the trail was open.
The Fitness Trail is one of ten trails that make up the Cedar Creek Trail System. I believe the Fitness Trail has been around for awhile and the other trails are recent developments. The TH for the Fitness Trail is about .25 miles up Cedar Creek Rd. on the left side. There is enough parking for about 10 cars. The trail takes off from the western end of the parking lot. We went through the gate and we were on the loop. The loop is a very elongated loop with very little to the north/south directions. We decided to go clockwise (north). It turns out there is an inner and outer loop for the Fitness Trail. The inner trail is only .25 miles long and leaves the outer loop almost immediately. Very quickly after that the trail turns west. There is some mild elevation gain along this stretch but nothing you couldn’t do pushing a stroller. The trail turns at .75 miles and makes its way back to the TH. The trail was very smooth, an easy walk. The only danger was tripping over a pine cone.
They had recently done a burn, so much of he surrounding forest floor was burnt black. Probably explained why there was no wildlife, except for some very vocal blue jays. Nice hike with the wife, though I was getting pine cones kicked at me on a regular basis. |
