I went to visit a friend from Texas and we agreed to meet somewhere in the middle and Ruidoso New Mexico was the center. I had not been hiking in over a month and this 4 day trip would be more of an exploratory trip checking out the trails in the area. Our first excursion was on the Cedar Creek Trail located on hwy 532 that takes you to Ski Apache. We did a portion of the trail (1.7 miles round trip) before it started raining. This trail is a short 1.6 miles with about a 600 foot elevation gain heading north on the trail from Cedar Creek and a 300 foot elevation gain if heading south from hwy 532. Nice short hike if you are in the area a few days and have dinner in town and aren't ready to call it a day.
Also made a side trip to Ski Apache and took the tram up to the top at 11400 feet. Felt a little guilty taking a tram when I had perfectly good legs that could walk it. There are great views from the top, or at least I'm told. We were in the clouds and couldn't see Sierra Blanca Peak at 12000 feet just a mile away or the white Sands below and to the west. The Crest trail passes by this point and is a 20 mile trail. This is on my list of trails I want to do when I come back. Sierra Blanca Peak is off limits to hiking due to the fact that it is on the Apache Indian reservation and is on sacred ground.
I didn't post my GPS route since it was just a portion of the trail. For the actual route the linked South Cedar Creek Trail will work. I have seen this trail also labeled as North Cedar Creek Trail on maps, all labeled trail #13.
