I planned on doing the Lime Kiln/Thumper/Lower Raptor loop again, but a couple miles up LK where it leaves the State Park and enters the National Forest, I impulsively changed my mind. I took the left turn to the Rattlesnake Wash overlook. As I looked down into the wash, I was tempted to explore it - so I followed a faint path down. I fully intended to retrace my path and head back up to Lime Kiln to exit, however the wash was so enchanting that I kept going down, down, down it. Found many small pools of water, and many animal tracks around them - including some kitty tracks that I followed quite a ways. Eventually I realized that I did't want to return the way I came, I wanted to continue hiking the wash and finish that way ... only problem was that I wasn't 100% sure that the wash would take me where I wanted to go. I couldn't find my map that morning, and didn't worry about it since I was planning on repeating a hike I had already done, on well-marked trails. I was pretty sure that the wash would deliver me back to my car - after all washes run down to rivers, right? - and to get to the river, this wash would have to cross through Deadhorse ... and I certainly felt like it was heading in the right direction, roughly parallel to the trail. Still, I always feel a bit of trepidation when traveling off-trail and not positive exactly where I am or where I'm going. Eventually I spotted a couple fence posts up to the left that looked familiar, then some horse tracks in the wash (there were absolutely no tracks other than wild animals up til then) and soon after I was pleased to see the Quail Trail cross the wash ... from there it was a 5 minute stroll back to my car. Awesomeness. Now that I know the lay of the land, next time I will explore and enjoy the wash even more. Or I might try Quail Wash next time. |
