Walked down to Shelby TH (about 10 minutes from the door). Parking at the TH is very limited….3 cars. The Old Post Trail is one of the longer trails in the Carroll Canyon area. It starts at the Shelby TH and winds all the way down to the Chavez TH. It pretty much is always going in a west or south direction. I didn’t realize it initially, but you are basically transversing a saddle. It is a gradual climb for the first 1.3 miles, to the Skywalker junction. And then it is a steady decline for the next 1.4 miles to the Chavez TH. The views are nice to the south as you are descending towards Chavez TH. Courthouse, Bell and Cathedral stand out nicely in the horizon. Coming back, Capitol Butte, Wilson and the surrounding mountains are also nicely shown to the north, once you pass the Skywalker juncture.
I did this hike as an in and out. Just getting familiar with the area. This trail connects to a lot of other trails, so it looks like there are a lot of looping options. Vegetation was typical for Sedona; stunted pines, juniper and piñons dotted the landscape, but provided minimal shade. Encountered 2 runners and 2 hikers while on the trail. Hiking from the resort added about 1 mile. |
