Got an early start to avoid the heat and crowds. Our go-to close-to-home hike. Easy to make a short or long hike and there is decent elevation gain as well. Hiked a little past Golden Prospect point for a nice view of Mt. Rainier. Berries are starting to come out and were delicious.

What a difference 3 weeks makes! Last time we strapped on microspikes from the start of the snow covered trail. Due to the recent warm temps, we didn't really encounter much snow until after Stan's overlook. Spotty at first but then pretty solid the last mile or so to Grand Prospect. We didn't use microspikes on the way up but they came in handy on the way down. Poles would work as well. We had planned to go to Dirty Harry's Peak but given the socked in weather, opted for old faithful, i.e. Rattlesnake Mountain. No views today and parts were shrouded in clouds/mist but still, a day out on the trail is better than a day at home.

Sunny skies meant a great day to hit the trails. While there was some wind, most of this hike is in the forest out of the wind so while we heard it, we didn't feel it except in a few places. Parking lot has been plowed but not completely. That said there are spots for 10+ cars. We hiked only until Grand Prospect viewpoint. The trail was snow covered the entire way. From the trailhead to Stan's Viewpoint is well packed down. We had micro spikes so we put them on from the start but you probably didn't need them, at least on the way up. From Stan's viewpoint to Grand Prospect there seems to have been a little less traffic but still the trail is easy to follow and pretty well packed down. The last little bit was sloppy in a few places but really it just felt like hiking in sand. A few people out on the trail: some with no traction, some with micro spikes, some with snowshoes and one trailrunner --- in shorts! Great hike close to home.

Our go-to hike when we want to get out but want something close to home. Lot was pretty full but I think there were more mountain bikers than anything. Saw a few hikers and trail runners out today. Trail is overgrown in some early sections but overall in good condition. Always a nice little workout to go to Grand Prospect and back.

One of favorites for a close-to-home quick hike. Parking was already pretty full when we arrived shortly after 8AM but I think the majority were mountain bikers. Saw more trail runners than hikers today but not overly crowded for a summer weekend. Berries are ripe and delicious! Once you start eating some, you can't stop. They definitely slowed our return trip as we took advantage to much on them. Hiked to Grand Prospect and back. Trail is overgrown in some sections but those sections are primarily located between the trailhead and Stan's Overlook.

A good hike close to home to help get in shape for the upcoming summer hiking season. Lots of work done since our last trip. A new mountain bike trail looks to be almost complete. A fair amount of people on the trail today but less crowded than expected given the nice weather. Felt good to get back out and get some mileage and elevation gain in. We hiked from the west trail head to Grand Prospect. We stopped by Stan's Overlook on the way back. Trillium are already out. As for critters, saw a couple of small frogs.

Took advantage of the free State Park day and hit Rattlesnake Mountain, a great option close to home. Hiked up to Grand Prospect before heading over to North Bend for lunch. Cloudy so no views today but it kept the temperature cool. Trail was a little overgrown in some early sections but overall in great shape. Quite a few people out on the trail today. Great to see lots of people enjoying National Trails Day.

Quick morning hike to Grand Prospect. Clear skies meant great views at both lookouts. Even Mt. Baker was visible. Not too many people out on the trail today (for this hike).

No views along Rattlesnake mountain today. Pretty much fogged/clouded in from Grand Prospect to East Peak. Nevertheless, still made for a good 12 mile hike. Lots of trail runners out today.

Beautiful fall day. Surprised that there were not too many people on the trail which was surprising. Hiked from the west trailhead over to East Peak. We hiked to Grand Prospect back in January and the snow then made for slow going. So much easier today. Mt. Rainier was barely visible at the East Peak radio tower but I did find a much better viewpoint about 1 mile from Grand Prospect along an old logging road. When you come to the trail sign that says East Peak is 1.3 miles, go through the gate. You then will have three choices: Right, Left or Middle Left. Take the middle left road and you'll get great views of Mt. Rainier in no time. Not much fall color yet but in another week or two this should be great hike to see some fall color.

Took advantage of the MLK holiday to escape the inversion that has had its grip on Seattle for the past few days. Was happy to see sunny, blue skies for our hike. Off and on snow for a good majority of the hike gave us an excuse to try out the new microspikes we recently got. So much easier with those on, especially on the way down. Nice views at both Stan's Overlook and Grand Prospect. Would have liked to spend a little more time at Grand Prospect enjoying the view but sitting in the shade on cold snow is not condusive to long lunches! Hope to do the whole hike to Rattlesnake lodge at some point -- would be nice to go with some friends so we can drop one car off and do the whole one-way hike.
