It's been hard to get out of town this holiday season, so my wife and I spent the afternoon taking in some of Mesa's cultural sites. We explored Hohokam culture at Mesa Grande, Hohokam and Mormon culture with a walk around the Park of the Canals and strictly Mormon culture by taking in the festival of lights at the Mormon Temple. Throw in some ice skating and delicious treats from an Asian bakery and call it a fun afternoon out.

Stretch the definition of hiking all you want and this still doesn't qualify. However, it does make for a nice lunch break stop, especially if you're into Hohokam culture. Some of the interpretive signs talk about other ruin sites in the Valley that were around as recently as 75 years ago. I think only Pueblo Grande and Mesa Grande remain. That alone makes it worth the stop.

Interesting that this ruin, only recently opened to the public, survived the surrounding development.
