| no partners | | I've starting making a habit of walking this trail sometime during the day, over the past week or so. It often seems too chilly to ride a bike, but not too chilly to walk. Over the summer, the Game and Fish Department made some improvements on the trail. They added a hard-packed pea gravel, and replaced all the informational placards. People from the community use this trail a lot.
On this particular day I saw a Northern Flicker, a type of woodpecker. It flew up into a tree, and the first thing I noticed, in addition to its size, was the white patch on the base of its back. When I see that white patch I instantly think of the Northern Harrier, aka Marsh Hawk. And this flicker is a fairly large bird. But in the tree it started in with typical woodpecker behavior. I didn't have binoculars. Yes, I have new glasses! Anyway, I did an online search and finally figured out which woodpecker it was.
I'd like to see the beavers in the area working on the several dams visible along the path, but I think I would have to get there before dawn. I should have done that in summer. Now it is often in the 20s at dawn!
The water in the Little Colorado River along this path has gone up and down since I moved back to the area last spring. I most often--all summer long, in fact--rode my bike on the path, on my way to tai chi class. (How many people get to ride a bike along the LCR on their way to tai chi class?) Despite circumstances of being a fulltime caregiver for my husband, and not being able to go camping, bike touring, backpacking or on river trips, I have a lot to be thankful for. |

Autumn Foliage Observation Isolated Not much left at all of leaves on the trees. It looks like winter now. |
