The road heads west out of Atomic City. High clearance isn't required until you get closer to the Butte. I rounded the southern and western faces until I reached an old ranch on the northwest side of the butte. From there a road heads five miles to the top, past a popular hang-gliding site and through small pine groves. On top of the butte there's an old lookout tower and a bathroom. You can also see hiking trails leading to the top. I returned to Atomic City by circling around the northern face of the butte. This very rough road crosses an open range. I had to blare the horn several times to clear cattle off the roadway. |
