An unpaved road goes to the summit, which features an antennae farm, a hang glider launching pad, and the Willard Eccles Observatory. The University of Utah operates the observatory. I read that hang gliders have reported achieving altitudes of 18,000 feet and distances of 150 miles.
The road to he summit is a little over 12 miles from pavement. I drove 40-45 mph for the first 5-6 miles, but 4WD was needed for the last 2.5 miles. In fact, I used 4LO for the last couple of miles.
If I had more time I would have checked out the ghost town of Frisco. I read that it was founded in 1875 after silver ore was discovered. It had a peak population of 6,000 people and had 23 saloons along with many gunfights and killings. Another ghost town, Newhouse, is in the area. Unlike Frisco, public drunkenness was prohibited in Newhouse, and it only had one saloon. |

Autumn Foliage Observation Isolated There were a few small stands of aspens with yellow leaves on the drive to the summit. |
