I have officially gone off my rocker!
Last year's marathon wasn't enough physical torture for my body, so this year I opted for the 51K. In honor of Area 51, of course.

The course, ET HWY 375, was its usual charming self, with plenty of opportunities for UFO sightings thanks to low clouds and far-off lightning.
Some spots you could tell had had wash-over from recent storms, but that had been cleared and cones placed to warn of any drop-offs at the shoulder.
The dense cloud cover meant it wasn't as light as last year's run and the coyotes seemed to be staying at home. It did rain on us fairly hard for about 2 miles and then lightly on and off a few other times. Fortunately, no nearby lightning and it never did pour. Mostly I just ran along (and then trudged at the end), since it was hard to really look around much in the dark.
The almost full moon did come out from behind the clouds a little every now and then, and sunrise was the beautiful kind we rarely get here.

This is a great run if you like a road course and night running with a twist. I myself will be back, but haven't decided on the distance.

Annual full moon Area 51 marathon. We ran on the Extraterrestrial Highway, in the dark, so that part wasn't terribly exciting, but the surface was even and no constant headlamp needed. The almost-full moon and a few shooting stars provided enough light for running. The coyotes serenaded us at various points along the course, providing a little musical accompaniment. The temperatures could not really have been better - low 70s at the 12am start time, and gradually decreasing into the high 50s from there. The course was slightly uphill for the first 13.1 mi (or first 6 mi for 1/2 marathon), then downhill or flat after Coyote Summit. Finish line for everyone in "beautiful" Rachel NV.

Some runners were lit up like christmas trees in crazy costumes, while others kept it minimal with the required reflective vest and headlamp. It was a scene and a lot of fun. There were whispers and jokes about aliens, but mostly just a bunch of crazy folks running (or walking) along the ET Highway in the dark.

And I finished my first ever marathon. :o
