Had to find something short and established that the pups could handle and this looked like a reasonable loop to try out.

Rim 613 traverses the steep cliffs above the Mancos River with nice views into the river basin and up across the high peaks of the La Platas. While it is open to dirtbike use, it would be insanity to ride this one, so despite the multiuse designation, foot travel is all you should encounter here (we saw nobody else by any means of motion).

Rim ends at Transfer Campground where we cut over the road to the Chicken Creek Trail. This route descended into a beautiful valley full of mature aspen and mixed conifers. A surpise to us was that Chicken Creek itself was not a creek. Apparently it is seasonal and we found only occasional pools where water surfaced along the otherwise rocky watercourse reminiscent of pre-monsoon conditions in Mogollon Rim canyons.

Upon reaching the Rim Trail junction along the creek, we opted to make the loop rather than continuing downstream to Mancos Lake State Park. Though we did also do a quick drive-by visit there on the way back to camp.

This is a mixed use trail, including motorcycles and MTB. Fortunately we didn’t encounter anyone else today.
Trail drops down into a canyon and follows the creek. Unfortunately I left my fly rod in camp.
I doubt if this creek gets much fishing pressure.

There are numerous creek crossings, I was able to keep my shoes dry. Rudy not so much.
