hiking_arizona reached out to me to see about recommendations for hikes in the Bay Area, and we ended up doing this gem today. Butano never disappoints, and I'm glad to have met and hiked with hiking_arizona. The weather today was marvelous, and we only saw 10 other people. I'm sure Big Basin was packed to the gills with hikers today, but Butano never seems busy.

Nice hike in Butano State Park. The marine layer hung around until late in the afternoon, and kept it nice and cool despite killing numerous photographic opportunities. There were more people on the trails today than when Ron and I did a similar loop here last August. I didn't take my pack off at all so I'm finally getting into the condition I want to be in for my trip to Lassen National Park in a few weeks.
It was very humid as is typical here in early summer. Of course the weather here in the Bay Area is bipolar so who knows what's normal anymore?
Good deed of the day: I found a nice pair of Oakley sunglasses just lying in the middle of the trail on the Canyon Trail, so I put them in my pocket. About a mile and 600' lower a dude was huffing uphill without a pack, and he asked me if I'd seen any sunglasses. Today was his lucky day.
I'd definitely hit this place a third time.

This hike was a pretty good butt kicker. Great views and very few people. It was fairly cool for this time of year, but we were lucky by going counterclockwise because most of the uphill was in dense forest. Good time as always.
