WTF? On one hand this is my favorite hike/run. I do it sometimes three times a year. The first 4 miles is through some of the most prime pristine old growth aspen stands in the area. It is literally my favorite place in the fall and I’ve done til his hike more than any other save Mt. Esther. There is history, cabins, geology, and most of all fall colors and amazing aspen stands… or there was…!
1 mile into the hike I witnessed the devastation/decimation of probably the best stand of old growth aspens in the area not from storms weather insects, but in the name of management by Co. parks and wildlife. My $40 annual fishing license I use only to access this area went toward decimating this stand and putting Elk Fence around it, but apparently doesn’t go to anyone in the local office answering the phone. BTW 17192275200. I know because I called # on the trail as soon as I got service. I have never been so irritated while in the trail and it didn’t help that I literally had 8+ miles to contemplate the destruction which made me more and more disgusted all while jumping over at least 30 fallen trees crossing the trail in areas that have less healthy sections of the forest which apparently my money doesn’t go toward maintaining. I spoke an old local couple as I was passing them to find out what happened? They spoke to a Ranger who was checking they had permits and they said he said Parks and wildlife cut down the old growth stand as an experiment to see if it would grow back and improve habitat. I said no he didn’t say that and they said that is exactly how he worded it! This just added to my aggravation. I spoke to Travis Sauder driving home 17194399635. He was polite even sent me utah study that they used to justify this action. He said Ranger shouldn’t have told the couple that, but did not deny in essence that is exactly what they did. He could not explain why they chose that part of the forest and admitted no one was involved in this or consulted other than their environmentalist person. When I asked him for a better or comparable old growth stand in our area I could visit he could not point me to a better stand. Basically they decided to decimate this stand. He claims that it will improve health, habitat, and eventually grow back prettier. I asked him how long it would take for the trees to grow a 100’ again and he could not answer. They had to put Elk fence around it because the elk would not let anything grow after the healthy forest was cut down. Presumably because there are no predators in the area to control the elk which unchecked thanks to previous man made decisions leave them uncontrolled. I’m for healthy forests and proper management, but this is about as PUMKIN STUPID AS INTRODUCING CANE TOADS TO AUSTRALIA AND LOOK HOW THAT TURNED OUT. Sorry for the rant! I think I’m grieving one of the most beautiful peaceful places I’ve visited that I will not be able to return to see in my lifetime. It Sucks!

Here is the link cited and given to me by Travis Sauder used to destroy (I mean manage synonyms right) this particular stand of Aspens.

This trail never disappoints for fall colors. Took me longer to run than last year as I’ve had an injury that has been nagging me for a couple of months. I almost turned around until I got out of the shade. It was 26 degrees at the start and I wasn’t sure I’d warm up enough to do the hike. Once I got moving the feet were better. The trail is worse and gets more difficult to run every year as the horse traffic seems to cause more damage than any other form of trail enjoyment. Water levels were much higher than previous years. Miles 5-8 have 6 steam crossings that are unavoidable if you want to run. They can be bypassed by use trails, but these have become overgrown thorny and seem to be returning to the wild. Did not see a single vehicle when I got there. A couple horse trailers and vehicles when I left. Everyone seems to be doing the loop clockwise which works well if your the first person there for solitude. I did not go up dome rock, but hope to do this as a family hike next year and take the kids to the top as they are both capable of 12 mile hikes now.

Got off the night shift after getting done with a flight 3:30 am and drove 2 hours home on 3:15 of sleep, Sarrah had already volunteered to get M to lacrosse knowing this would probably be my only window this year to catch fall colors at Dome Rock with other commitments taking a lot of time like hand staining the entire house which I have spent the last two weeks home doing. I really wasn’t feeling up to it, but opted to do it and decided to do it counterclockwise so the main uphills would be in the middle. Colors on the way looked promising although quite variable from green, to prime, to dried dead and brown. I was surprised at how good the colors were on the hike which also had a lot of variability and was not as good as previous years, but good nonetheless. Decided to jog it as I had about 3 hours to do the hike not including travel to and from. Previous versions of this hike used use trails that help to avoid the creek crossings. I opted to skip these and run strait through every crossing and just have wet feet. This got the mileage down to a little over 10 miles and saved time. The hills were horrible as they are deep dirt sand/gravel from horse use. Some areas were so steep and loose not only coils I not run them, but I had to use trees to pull myself up. In the past they were more packed. I don’t know if it was the shortened miles due to water crossings or doing it the oppposite direction which starts the hike and ends the hike with descents rather than ending it in a 4 mile gradual climb, but it seemed short and I couldn’t believe how quick the hike was over.

Came back to check out the fall colors. Trail ran it in 2 hrs and then ran with my daughter on the Intemann trail for her cross country. Colors were great couldn’t scramble Dome Rock thanks to the wrist. Did the loop clockwise second water crossing bypass trail is non existent. Opted to get feet wet for the rest of the run. 51 degrees at 10:30 great temps. This is still one of the best kept secrets in my area. Worth a visit if you get to this area for any reason.

Took Noah on a couple hikes to check out fall colors today. We did not have enough time to do all of Dome Rock so we went clockwise through the aspen forest. Later we drive up the 67 and hiked to Horsethief falls for a total of about 8 miles. There are prime areas and large swaths at Dome Rock that need a week. I’ll be back to trail run Dome Rock when I don’t have Noah next week. Made it back in time to do cross country with Micah after school. Meet and lacrosse game same time so she will not be running at this meet. :( The life of a stay at home sport Dad until I get released for work.

Trail run to stretch out legs after carrying Noah up Grays yesterday. Colors are a few weeks away. Lot more water flowing than usual. Had time to do this between drop off and pick up. Not a huge AEG Hike so it fit the bill.

Did this between drop off and pick up. Fogged in at our house skipped Dome Rock itself as it was fogged in and probably slick. Fall colors great, but a lot past peak.

Annual hike of the loop for fall colors. Definitely the best hike for aspens in the area and possibly the entire universe. It's hard to describe it without putting a big PUMPKIN! In front of adjective you use to describe hiking through 4 miles of aspen forest. This made up for the leaf peeping on the 67. Plus you get to climb a big Pumpkin Dome! Oh and the views from said Dome. Clockwise loop is best. I felt really sorry (for about two seconds)for the dozen or so hikers and horseback riders who were doing out and backs on the published non loop trail to Dome Rock viewpoint since they skipped the heavenly walk through the woods which is why I saw almost no one until the return despite two horse trailers and about 10 cars in the parking lot. I would not recommend this hike to anyone especially in the fall, but if you insist on the out and back keep to the use trails on the right on the way in and left on the way out to keep your feet dry and reduce the amount of horse poop you step on. If you do the clockwise loop during the right time of year you might just agree that this is the most amazing aspen hike in the universe! BTW follow the aspens up the ravine and remember crack is good if you want to make it to the top of the Dome for some of the best views this side of Pikes Peak.
Almost forgot the views from the rock.

Clockwise this time. Still my favorite hike for fall colors and this time got to share it with my Dad. :y: The scenery and company didn't disappoint. My dad is still getting around pretty good for turning 70 last month! He even climbed to the top. :D Fall colors were on the spring creek side of the loop.

Hike #1
Frost in the shade nice temps. Did this clockwise this time and the fall colors didn't disappoint. Views were great from Dome Rock. I did accidently found a short cut going down the wrong side of dome rock ending up in the canyon I needed to get to to get back to the truck. My suggestion if you do this hike in either direction is to follow the ravine of aspen to the summit and back. This trips route is not recommended.
This is becoming one of my favorites for the variety of scenery and solitude. Without a doubt the best fall colors hike in the area. I was late for the stand of old growth aspens, but with 4 miles of aspen forest you will find some color. I tried skipping the use trails to avoid the water crossings and got a different view of the canyon which was nice. Unfortunately, with the low water levels the crossing logs and rocks were all doable except for where the trail splits at the beaver dams. Walked back last two miles with wet feet thinking this was going to cancel my afternoon festivities, but they were dry enough to allow me to go retrieve my toes off Sentinel Point in the afternoon. :y:

Great hike with the family! Weather was a little warm, but a nice day with predictable T-storms in the afternoon to cool things off. With Micah recently potty training my wife and I were a little concerned with taking a hike of this length and weather Micah would be willing to go outside. All I can say is she is good to go as long as there is a smooth rock and rock to place her feet. :sl: Logs won't work, but hey I didn't get pee'd on so whatever works. We did not go to the summit for what would have been awesome views as it was a pretty clear day. On the way up to the turn off Micah fell asleep in the carrier and Sarrah got really sick. Not sure what it was, but she was out today from work as well. At the turn off for the summit she was concerned about making it through the hike so we took a break pushed some fluids and continued back to the truck. She felt better when the storms came and the breeze picked up, but she started getting sick in the car on the way home. :(
Micah was a good sport, but would have preferred walking more during the hike. Looking forward to coming back in the fall. This is one of the better hikes I've found for fall colors. We saw 7 horses and dodged 7 horses worth of crap on the trail, but saw no other hikers.
My pack was a little heavy at 10lbs + 30lb. toddler + 2 liters of water and changes of clothes just in case which were unnecessary. :y:
Probably, the next few trips will be shorter to let Micah hike a little more and I think we are getting close to getting in some camping trips. :y: They grow up so fast. :D

Wow! What a surprise gem of a hike. Left the house after noon and it was 25 degrees and starting to snow heavily. I had canned the plan to get dropped off in Manitou for a longer hike back home. With temps. In the 20s and 19 mph winds it was a good call. :) I've enjoyed the fall colors on this side of Pikes Peak and this hike caught my eye. This hike had everything. Rock formations fall colors and a summit. It follows and old stage coach road past the ruins of an old private hunting lodge that burned down in the 40s. It had several water crossings as it follows a creek that has been dammed up by beavers. Stay to the right along the slope to bypass all of these crossings. I ran into a honeymooning couple as I was heading to the overlook. She had fallen in trying to jump across and were on the other side of a major crossing. They had turned back because of the crossings. I ran into them in the last 1/2 mile and they had taken another trail to make a shorter loop but never made it to Dome Rock because of the crossings. I suspect this became Dome Rock State Wilderness for the Sheep lambing as it used to be part of Mueller State Park. There are a couple dome shaped granite monoliths in the area and other formations. The trail I took back climbs up around Dome Rock along an aspen forest. The summit views were awesome despite snow, overcast skies and Pikes Peak being in a cloud. Hiking offtrail to the summit was relatively easy. I do not think I would climb to the top in wet or icy weather. The runnels channelling from the top of dome rock are deep and interesting. Fall colors looked to have peaked until I got higher in elevation. The trail widens again after leaving the rock and the rest of the hike was a quiet climb through a large aspen forest with intermittent rock formations and lots of fall colors. A definite must do for fall colors. I got snowed on and the temps. Started going down toward the end of the hike although I don't think the temps hit 32 today. The only thing that would've made it better was having Muesli along, unfortunately dogs, Mtn Bikes, camping, fires, or climbing with gear are not allowed. Check the description as the middle third of the hike including the dome rock overlook are closed during Mtn Sheep lambing season which leaves you middle July to the end of November. :(
