Graduation time back in Bahstyn. Had to get out for a few minutes in search of ticks and poison ivy. A remarkably dry airmass was still insufferably humid for this Arizona visitor and I got back home soaking wet, even after stopping into the quickiemart for an ice cold gatorjuice.

Public land back east is a checkerboardcluster. In 5 miles I went from the Cliff Grant Mgt Area into the Easton Town Forest, then the Oliver Ames Parker Reservation, before crossing a street and hitting the Flyaway/Long Pond Mgt Area. Some open source maps had trails marked that I wanted to make a loop with, but the short stretch of private property was aggressively marked as no tresspassing and I figured Uncle Chums in jail might put a damper on the weekend, so I retreated.

Lucky decision though cause I found the postage-stamp sized revolutionary war cemetery that is tucked away between the backyards of two homes. Always cool history back in this part of the world while folks in Arizona were living behind piles of rocks.

Along the way spooked a couple of deer, including one that stuck around for a photo. A pfat-bike rider with a .22 on his back was out hunting turkey, as spring season had only 3 days to go. Didn't see any turkey until the next day running on the shoulder of the 495 on the way to the cape. ](*,)

As is customary during family fun times, I take the opportunity to self-rescue and find some outdoor relief from loved ones. :)

Wednesday I was able to get out for nearly two hours, enjoying a whole new set of trails from my previous trip to Borderlands. The weather was a pleasant chilly drizzle, something that as a desert dweller I found to be absolutely delightful. Apparently, the locals don't see it the same way and this otherwise-popular state park was mine to enjoy alone. The leaves have long-since fallen and I enjoyed tones of grey and rust as I splooshed through the woods. Each time I reached a junction, I opted for the longer route until I ended up making a loop about twice as long as I had planned.

There's supposed to be a parking or use fee, and I didn't realize that and didn't have a pass. My out-of-state plates would be a dead giveaway to any patrol driving by, so I was relieved when I arrived back at the car to find a windshield free of any envelopes. :)

Thursday morning, I joined Amy and Julie on a nice walk from the house across town and into the Clifford G Grant Management Area, which adjoins the Easton Town Forest. It's actually a little bit impressive how much public space this town has managed to squeeze into an old, densely populated New England town. There's not much in the way of elevation, but for a backyard walk, no complaints either.

Went on a nice bike ride with my niece. I rode my sister-in-law's pink bike, and Marin rode my brother's bike because of seat adjustment issues. He needs to buy better bikes!

We managed to get lost in the Town Forest (Clifford Grant Mgmt Area). Apparently they are working on building some better trails there this fall, which will be nice.

Once in Borderland, the trails were fantastic. It was a perfect Friday, temps in the mid 60s, colored leaves everywhere.

I had forgotten how different foliage is back east. There are trees that are stripped bare already, and some that are still fully green. All right next to each other. But then there are those that are also at their peak! The wide range does allow for the "season" to last a lot longer than the small window we have here in AZ for the few species that change.

I think I avoided deer ticks, but I guess it will be a few weeks before I know for sure. They're so tiny it is very easy for you to not notice them. For all the snakes and critters you look out for in the desert, the thought of getting Lyme Disease and not ever really knowing how it happened is something to keep in mind.

Did a few other hikes that I added to this photoset, but weren't part of this bike ride. Nice weekend back east!
