A great day exploring several different canyons.

A lot of history in this area. I have visited it dozens of times and still discover new things every time I go.

With hopes of staying as close to the south side of the Gila River as possible we tried various routes. We traveled over a number of marked dirt roads, well-traveled washes and even on seldom-used old tracks. While the route would have been just right for the Samurai, with it out of action with a broken spring we had to use the Pathfinder. While it has 4WD, it is taller, wider, has less ground clearance, too much rear overhang and has no lockers so we had to be careful where we attempted to go. Even so, it dragged the back end on numerous occasions and ended up with a well-and-truly done top-to-bottom case of Arizona pinstripes. Oh well, I bought it to get to the less accessible hiking locations so if this comes along with the deal, so be it. Of course once I bought the Samurai I didn't expect to be using the Pathfinder for the rough stuff.

Back to the drive... eventually we had to drive on part of the Florence-Kelvin highway for a short while before resorting to less-traveled routes again. We stopped long enough to hike up Grayback before continuing out by Kelvin.

Another fun day of hiking and 4-wheeling.
