What a genius move to call this mountain Polaris....after all its close to the North Star mine.

We camped in an old mining camp with lots off rusty stuff and broken glass and cholla :scared: . The plan was to look at the map in the morning and plot our route. Instead of doing that we checked out the mine and headed up from there. The mine area is really cool with an old bunkhouse and mining stuff and old stuff and concrete and heavy stuff. After checking out the stuff we headed up.

We eventually hit the old hand built trail :y: and before long we were at the old tent foundation below High Henry mine. From here it was up and some more up and cholla and traverse and then the saddle :y: . The saddle to the peak was more enjoyable. The peak had stellar views of this awesome area. We enjoyed the summit and had a beverage and lunch. I kept hearing noises that sounded like dogs or coyote but never saw them. When chums came up, we later heard a voice and we figured it was a mountain lion hunt. We never did see them though. Chums went down the peak a little to a lookout and later I followed. He later discovered a rattler and I went back to check it out.

The trip back was a little easier and I headed over to the canyon below High Henry mine and found an old wheel and trailer thingy. We stayed on the trail most of the way back and then headed towards the truck. I saw a mining claim with an inscription on a rock. Next, I stumble upon another mining campsite with a rock foundation for something..tents? We decided that Kofa Butte will have to wait for a future trip. What a great weekend in a rugged remote regal area. Thanks Chums it was frickin awesome.

And now for a song.

His name is Chumley, he is Norwegian
With dreams of becoming a weatherman
He wears flipflops and bright colored t-shirts
And likes to hike and drink at bars
He drives a Taco and laughs at cars
The desert floor is his playground
Always there with phone in hand.

At the Kofa (KO!) KoFacabana
The hottest spot northwest of Marana
At the KoFa (KO!) KoFacabana
Beer flowing freely and calfs were a flexin
At the Kofa.... we hiked a lot.

My name is BobP
I am the old guy
With dreams of younger days
But mostly through a purple haze
Now I'm hiking instead of running
Its not work its really fun
Sleepin sometimes in the sun
Happy just to be alive.
Hair was black but not no more.

At the Kofa... they hiked a lot.

But that was a several days ago,
When we weren’t moving very slow
Now calfs are sore and do not glow
Still in bright t-shirts and dressed to kill,
Time to swallow another pill
Try to stand but fall in pain
Hoping for a monster rain
Cannot flush this from my brain.

At the Kofa... you’ll love this place.

On Sunday, we had planned to bag Polaris, followed by Kofa Butte. But Polaris was a whole lot of work, and after bagging peaks off-trail for four straight days, I was completely done and there would be no attempt at Kofa. That is left for another day, but looks really cool.

We started from our camp and walked over to the Antares Mine and explored there (see triplog and photos here: http://hikearizona.com/photoset=28991

I didn't realize there was an old handmade trail to the High Henry Mine that makes for a solid route for most of the ascent. And since we started from the mine, we didn't find the route until after spending a good amount of energy blazing a new path off trail straight up a rocky ridge.

Bob found the old route, and led us to the old tent site below the High Henry Mine. From there, the ascent is strictly off-trail and features steep talus slopes covered with cholla. The going was slow for me as Bob pushed ahead. We stayed high, climbing straight up the fall-line until reaching the cliffs above, and then traversing to the left along the base of the cliff to the saddle. From there the ascent to the peak is open and easy.

On the return, we stayed in the drainage which would prove to be a better option going up. But you can't descend the whole way, and at some point must traverse back to the talus for the best descent. If I were to do it again, I would climb the talus and traverse to the drainage rather than going to the base of the cliff higher up.

We spent some time on the peak, and I saw a black-tailed rattlesnake ... the first of the year for me ... that quickly took refuge under a rock. There was a mysterious barking, screaming, or yelling noise -- perhaps a wild animal being attacked. Very loud noises. After scanning the terrain with my binoculars unsuccessfully finding the source of the noises, we heard what was obviously human speech, and determined that we had heard hounds on a lion hunt on the mountain below us. We never heard a shot, so the assumption is that the lion got away.

On the descent, we followed the old route as it switchbacks back and forth down the mountain. It has been many years since it was used, and the cut in the mountain seems to have made a perfect spot for Palo Verdes to take root. So it was pretty common to have to deviate off the actual cut to get around the trees. Nonetheless, it was easy to follow, and I wished we had taken the route on the way up. I might have still had the energy to hit Kofa Butte after?

This peak is located in the KOFA NWR, east of Signal Peak.

I parked here: 33.294872, -113.986782. Got a nice early start at the crack of 4pm. I didn't take any trails, just scrambled up in a round about way. Headed east and over the North Star Mine and then up and west. Walked past the High Henry Mine (deep shaft, glad it was still light out or I could have fallen in!). Not too difficult but its all loose rock and lots of cholla. I made it to the peak just after sunset. Nice views from the top of King Valley and Castle Dome to the south.

I was planning to camp on the top but when I got up there it was only 6pm. After realizing I'd be up there for about 13 hours in the dark with not much to do I decided just to head back down. At this point it was already dark so I tried to take the most direct route down. From what I could (or couldn't) see, that was the wash that goes down from about the High Henry Mine to the road. The wash goes from loose rock and sharp brush to wide open smooth rock slabs and back again, alternating a few times. I almost got cliffed-out in one spot but was able climb down a crack with a cholla right in the middle. Of course I got some of it stuck to me! So here I am standing on a tiny ledge with just enough room for one foot, about 20 feet up, in the dark, tweezers in one hand and hanging on to some crumbling rock with the other, trying to pull a big chunk of cholla out of my forearm! Anyways, nice short day hike carrying all my gear and extra water

(mileage is a guess)
