Road to the trailhead (gate where they close the road) is completely snow free. Actually the first part of the trail is snow free. Then some small patches and then there's a lot of snow but we planned to snowshoe so we were happy to see the snow. Snow is pretty soft and for the first 2 miles we didn't sink down too much. Continuing on, it became more work to break trail. It was our first snowshoe so perhaps we weren't using the correct technique but it was like walking in heavy sand which made it slow going. We stopped after three miles in and will be back again (probably next year) to complete the trip. Saw only one other person on the trail during our return. Let him know he'd have to break the trail for the last two miles to the lake. Saw lots of critter tracks across the trail, including one that looked like some kind of small cat -- perhaps a lynx.
