The syncline Loop was the hardest hike we did on this whole trip. The sign said it was 8.3 miles but both the route scout and my Garmin said 10.5. The sign said extremely strenuous but I added the park carveout to it meaning, don't do it if you are a couch potato. The sign at the one mile point was my next clue, it didn't recommend turning around it commanded "extremely strenuous, turn around". The trail drops down continuously into a canyon that dumps into Upheaval Canyon that eventually drains into the Green River. Steep rocky trail but nothing I wasn't use to. The walk along the creek bed was easy enough but when you take the trail out of the canyon that's where it gets interesting. The trail follows up a side canyon to Upheaval Canyon that is a box canyon. as you are walking up the canyon you keep wondering how are they getting me out of here (I didn't have a GPS route loaded in my Garmin). Once at the end of the canyon it becomes a boulder climb. The trail is kind of marked so it was easy enough to follow. Took a long time to maneuver the boulders. In places it was a bit unnerving for me because there were a few overhangs that I was a bit uncomfortable with especially when you are pooped. Poor Ginny she had no idea what I was getting her into. She performed like a trooper though probably better than me on the overhangs. After about an hour we got on top of the boulder field and the long trip back was what I call a well behaved trail (kind of like a well behaved function in math). Asked if I would do this again, hell ya it was a neat trail just more than I expected. I think they need to add a few expletive's before the Turn Around on the sign.

There was a little water in the creeks down below in places but I would only use it if I was desperate. I brought a quart with me and Ginny brought 2. It was enough for me but if I did it again I would bring 2 quarts also. There were 2 other hikers we saw on the trail and one park ranger from Arches. The amazing part of this hike was that Ginny was still talking to me when we got done.

This hike is no walk in the park, but it's rewarding. Dropping off the rim of Island in the Sky, you make your way through a couple of canyons with cottonwoods, and a few pools of water. For me, it was a difficult hike due to all the ups and downs and climbing up and over hundreds of boulders. I had no technical difficulties with it, however. I just got really tired. It was pretty warm, pushing 90.

Hard to choose between this park and Zion as my favorite in Utah. Moab was definitely my favorite. I would love to live in a city where I was surrounded my towering cliffs and right next to some of the most beautiful land I have ever seen. Utah really blew my mind and was such a unique experience.

This loop was absolutely my favorite hike besides Angel's Landing. I love love love canyons for some reason so this was absolutely fun for me. We did the loop backwards starting with the easiest descent first and having to climb the steeper side out but this hike had everything. Towering cliff walls, a scramble over a boulder slide, a descent all the way to the bottom of the canyon, and such beautiful scenery that it felt like being in the Grand Canyon. I plan to come back to this park and check out more of its beautiful trails :D

The Syncline Loop is an excellent hike around a fantastic geologic feature in Canyonlands National Park Island in the Sky District. We did a side trip to take advantage of the sun angle, but stayed on-trail the rest of the time. Good boulder scrambling just before reaching the lowest point in the hike. Highly recommend the hike, but be prepared for some exposure.

After spending Labor Day fishing at Hidden Lake in the La Sal Mountains (28 trout caught!), I came back down to Moab and did a little canyon hike before heading up to Canyonlands NP. I was lucky to get the last site in the campground, and ended up sharing it with two German gents who didn't have a back up plan when they arrived and found the campground full.

I arrived at the trailhead just as the sun was popping up, and hiked the loop clockwise upon advice from a park ranger. This turned out to suit my preference, for in this direction the descent is on switchbacking trail, and the ascent out of the canyon is more of a bouldering climb which naturally slows one down to a reasonable pace.

The trail was for the most part well marked with cairns or followed a clearly worn tread, though there were one or two spots in the Syncline Valley section where cairns were missing due to recent water flow and a bit of searching was required to get back on track.

Not having hiked much recently, I decided against adding on the spur trail that goes towards the center of the dome. Near its junction was the only other tricky part which I had been warned of in advance. After following canyon/wash trail for a mile or two, the trail suddenly turns off and ascends a stone staircase to the inside and then continues on.

The Syncline Valley section of the trail was lush and green, but without much in the way of wildflowers. Once back on top after the bouldery ascent, I made good time back around to the trailhead, not having seen a soul the entire way. Breaking in a new pair of boots, my toes were sore enough that I declined to walk the shorter Vista trail, which I'm sure would have given a better sense of this geological feature than what you get by hiking around it.
