| no partners | | Having logged just over 30 miles between 4 pm on Friday and noon on Sunday, there was definitely some pep knocked out of my step by the time I finished my little adventure up/around Red Mountain. But with beautiful weather and many hours of daylight left, I was not about to call it quits and decided to knock off some short, nearby summit hikes. The first was Ebert Mountain, located just to the SW of the junction of Routes 180 & 144. I drove a short ways down one of the nearby jeep roads that branches off 144 and then proceeded toward the peak on foot.
Thanks to having been heavily torched, there is practically no brush to contend with. In fact, despite being off-trail, the area has been so badly burned that both visibility and maneuverability are better than most trails. The combination of good to excellent footing, many boulder outcroppings to climb on if desired, and many paths by which to approach make this a versatile and fun little summit hike. I opted for a lasso loop that incorporates the two highest points and longest ridgelines, but the mountain is approachable from all sides, resulting in many fun-looking route options.
I did not find any survey markers but was surprised to find a small summit register near the highpoint comprised of the bare bones basics: a container consisting of a small supplement bottle, a few small sheets of paper, and a small, beat up pencil that surprisingly still writes. There were only three other names in the register, all from from 2014. However, given that the register had ended up deeply sandwiched under a rock pile, the lack of sign-ins doesn’t surprise me. I’m pretty decent when it comes to finding registers but almost overlooked it as well. |
