We are on track to stand atop all the cinder cones between highway 180 and the i-40...why? I dunno, cuz we live right here and we can.
So five of us met up in Valle and piled in my car, first spent about an hour looking for artifacts and petroglyphs. found them quite easily, and then we all headed out to FR 144.
A week ago this same road was so muddy my car was slip sliding all over the place so we backtracked and hiked up Ebert Hill instead (check out that description later this week for some history on the hill)

This week the 144 was perfectly dry so we had no trouble getting to our destination which was basically Butcherknife Tank.

We went up Butcherknife Hill then Alycia. Saw lots of historic things along the way up and down. Walked with some cows for about a mile then walked through the fenced in Butcherknife Tank surrounded by very curious cows. No, I didn't get to pet them.

This was a lazy little dayhike but was perfect with new friends and beautiful views.
4 cinder cones down...a couple dozen to go

Sitting just over 2 miles as the crow files from the highpoint of Ebert Mountain, [and just under a 4.5 mile drive from where I parked to hike Ebert], Butcherknife Hill proved to be a perfect option for finishing the day. Like Ebert Mountain, Butcherknife Hill has also been heavily torched. However, [unlike Ebert Mountain], Butcherknife lacks the fun boulders and pretty, orange colored soil that Ebert had. The footing on Butcherknife is also not quite as good [but definitely not terrible].

While I don’t recommend planning an itinerary around Butcherknife Hill or making a special trip to bag this tiny summit; it might be a perfect option for those who live in the area and are looking for some new, [or for those traveling through and in need of a quick hike to stretch the legs, or something short due to time constraints, etc.]. For me, Butcherknife was hike #3 of the day, and I did not have much energy left by this point. Thus, it proved to be the perfect add-on.

While the views are not exceptional compared to what the Flagstaff area has to offer, they are still quite beautiful, and the drive to the base of the small hill is very beautiful and peaceful [although high clearance will definitely be needed to make it]. I was unable to find a register or survey maker, but I did find a few fire rings. Like Mount Ebert [and many mountains in the Flagstaff area] the summit ridgeline of Butcherknife Hill forms a horseshoe, and I was able to make a loop-like path, following the horseshoe.

After Butcherknife, I could not resist the short scamper up UN 7063, located to the SE of Butcherknife other the other side of the jeep road. With a couple hours of daylight left, I was tempted to grab a few other small peaks in the area, but having logged just over 36 miles in just under 48 hours by this point, my body was ready to call it a day.

The original plan was to hit Hobble Mountain and a few others but I somehow got the directions mixed up and we ended up here. We parked near Ebert Tank which was totally dry. BrunoP saw something and chased it. I'm guessing it was a jackrabbit but I never saw it but I did see one later and we also saw 7 pronghorns. It started out nice but got a little toasty even though it was in the 80's. Found something old and then something older...Oh and someone hated coleman gas canisters. I wonder if Navin R. Johnson was ever in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way to do this again but it was fun hoping fences and hangin with Bruno.
