Like Ebert Mountain, Butcherknife Hill has also been heavily torched. However, [unlike Ebert Mountain], Butcherknife lacks the fun boulders and pretty, orange colored soil that Ebert had. The footing on Butcherknife is also not quite as good [but definitely not terrible].
While I don’t recommend planning an itinerary around Butcherknife Hill or making a special trip to bag this tiny summit; it might be a perfect option for those who live in the area and are looking for some new, [or for those traveling through and in need of a quick hike to stretch the legs, or something short due to time constraints, etc.]. For me, Butcherknife was hike #3 of the day, and I did not have much energy left by this point. Thus, it proved to be the perfect add-on.
While the views are not exceptional compared to what the Flagstaff area has to offer, they are still quite beautiful, and the drive to the base of the small hill is very beautiful and peaceful [although high clearance will definitely be needed to make it]. I was unable to find a register or survey maker, but I did find a few fire rings. Like Mount Ebert [and many mountains in the Flagstaff area] the summit ridgeline of Butcherknife Hill forms a horseshoe, and I was able to make a loop-like path, following the horseshoe.
After Butcherknife, I could not resist the short scamper up UN 7063, located to the SE of Butcherknife other the other side of the jeep road. With a couple hours of daylight left, I was tempted to grab a few other small peaks in the area, but having logged just over 36 miles in just under 48 hours by this point, my body was ready to call it a day. |
