I've been tossing around the idea of tackling the Ko'olau Range as a multi-night backpacking trip at some point... but Jared is of the opinion that I should build up some stamina first (is he calling me soft? Jerk!). We overloaded our packs, and started out from Dillingham Airfield with a carefully considered plan to "wander around" and "figure it out as we go".
This worked out pretty well! We took the Kealia Trail to its end, then continued along the ridge to the west on an unmarked trail. I originally just wanted to get to the top of the closest peak, which appeared to be the highest point nearby... but then I noticed all the pine trees and neat-looking geology up ahead, so we just kept going. We eventually reached the Air Force base on the west side of the island, with big signs warning not to trespass, and another sign with a map! The map identified the trail we'd taken as the Kuaokala Trail, and showed an access road heading back to the Kealia Trail- perfect!
Judging from how sore my legs are, I must begrudgingly admit that Jared was right-- I'm definitely getting soft.

Jared and I headed up to Dillingham Airfield to hike a trail he'd run with his roommate (they had thought it was the Peacock Flat trail, but we later realized this was incorrect).

From the parking lot, there was a short walk across the air field before the trail reached the base of the mountain and started the switchbacks that would take us up the steepest part of the mountain. After about a mile, the trail straightened out and followed the small ridge leading up towards the main ridge of the Wai'anae Range.

I wasn't feeling great, so after pushing through a few steepish hills, we turned back at the bottom of the next decent climb (although looking at the map now, I can see that I should have just pushed on-- we were pretty close!). Next time. :)
