BACKGROUNDER
Got an email from my Dad saying he just got a message from his Cardiologist that he's scheduled for an ICD implant at 10am on Monday 8/25 at Hamilton General Hospital. Time to re-arrange some plans, cash in some air miles, and head home to see my parents...
THE TREK
Sat 8/23 - Ahwatukee AZ to base camp in Burlington Ontario Canada via PHX to ATL to YYZ ( thx to Delta Airmiles).
Up at 3:30am to catch 6:00am flight to ATL (a quick turnaround having just driven back from the Big Sur Coastline the night before [ photoset ] ).
Called my brother Rod while curbside at Toronto Pearson Airport to come and pick me up (he was waiting in cellphone lot). He transported me to my parents home in Burlington Ontario. Unpacked some presents from AZ and went to grab my iPhone 4S - short story it was gone - after much work beaurocracy, an iPhone 5S should be waiting at my home in AZ when I'm back (that was sure a complicated way to get a new smartphone just as iPhone 6 will be launched)!
Fitbit Totals = 6.06 miles and 120 AEG
Sun 8/24 - BBQ at my brother's
BBQ New York Strips, BBQ shrimp, corn-on-the-cob, and choice Canadian craft brews - Creemore Springs Traditional Pilsner https://www.creemoresprings.com/en/Our% ... lsner.aspx and Sleeman Cream Ale https://www.sleeman.ca ! Throw in a swimming pool, Blue Jays on the radio (miss voices of Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth) and late night poker game and that's Summer Canadiana just as I remember it...
Fitbit Totals = 6.17 miles and 60 AEG
Mon 8/25 - Procedure day at Hamilton General Hospital
6:30 am checkin for Medtronic Protecta-XT CRT-D implant scheduled for 8am in Electrophysiology Lab on 4th floor.
Dr. Jeff Healy - EP
Brian - EP Lab head nurse
Gary Stefanov - MDT sales rep
Laura DeBellis - MDT Clinical Specialist Certain "arc" knowing I worked on the original implantable defibrillators when I joined Medtronic straight out of school and worked with the pioneering team led by Dr George Klein based out of University Hospital in London Ontario.
Can report that Dad had classic indications for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with ejection fraction (EF) below 35% and wide QRS (above 130 msec). A right bundle branch block appearing on Dad's ECG could prove problematic, but Dr. Healy declared the procedure a success obtaining 80msec to 120 msec QRS width response during left heart lead placement in the coronary vein he ultimately selected. He fully expects Dad to be a CRT responder. I was having this conversation with Dr. Healy at about 9:30am as my Dad was being transferred to the step down/recovery ward. Dr. Healy ended the conversation by suggesting we stop by to say hello to Dad and then go grab a coffee and snack expecting discharge by lunch time. At 11:30am Dad walked into the EP Lab Visitor Room and the 3 of us proceeded to walk out of Hamilton General to the parking lot.
PS - for more serendipity for this "arc" - Dr. Jeff Healy is a medical graduate from my alma mater, Queens University. Gary Stefanov was hired by me into Medtronic. Electronics for the Protecta-XT CRT-D device were developed and manufactured at MDT Tempe Campus where I currently have an office...
Later in the afternoon, took my Dad shopping at Best Buy to pick up a Samsung Galaxy Tab S and FitBit ONE. Got him up and going in no time. Dad was raring to go to start using the FitBit so we did a mile circuit on the Burlington Downtown to Burloak Multi-Use Path [ Burlington Downtown to Burloak Multi-Use Path ] Dad reported he wasn't fatigued after the walk and wasn't "out of puff" the way he'd been feeling lately. Hmmmm - CRT or placebo effect already? Think Dad had almost 3 miles logged on the FitBit by the end of the night.
Fitbit Totals = 8.37 miles and 170 AEG
Tue 8/26 - "no plan" day
Mom was intrigued by Dad's FitBit so we decided to get her ONE too with a stop at a Canadian Icon for lunch - Harvey's https://www.harveys.ca
Dad was feeling a little sore today and took one of the prescription Tylenol-2 and that knocked him out. Went to my brother's to hang out by the pool and BBQ followed by a late night Euchre game...
Fitbit Totals = 6.93 miles and 120 AEG
Wed 8/27 - waterfront day
Mom and Dad wanted to take me to the Burlington waterfront to show me all the changes that had been put in place the last couple of years. Walked a few miles on the Waterfront Trail - Burlington [ Waterfront Trail - Burlington ] before heading for lunch at a local icon, Easterbrook's Footlong Hotdogs https://www.facebook.com/EasterbrooksBurlington
Fitbit Totals = 9.80 miles and 150 AEG
Thu 8/28 - MDT Canada get together at Ruth's Chris Morning walk with Dad to another Canadian Icon, Tim Horton's https://timhortons.com Got together with the old MDT Canada crew, Ferry, Eric, Gary, and me, over an excellent steak and choice beverage to swap stories and get caught up. Also had to go check out the Bruce Trail [ Bruce Trail ]
Fitbit Totals = 5.47 miles and 170 AEG
Fri 8/29 - Chaps Wings day
Morning walk with Dad to Tim Hortons for coffee. He's become an expert using his FitBit and is religiously synching with his new Samsung Tablet.
I think this is a part of the world that's serious about chicken wings (unlike the insults that are served up in Arizona) so I had a request in for some Chaps Wings, wrapped up the week sampling wings at Chaps. Yes, that's how to do wings!
Fitbit Totals = 6.84 miles and 170 AEG
Sat 8/30 - fly home day
Up at 6am to catch my 11am flight home via ATL carrying all sorts of goodies not found in the USA and prepared to battle long weekend crowds at the airports. Thankfully my TSA PreCheck status got me into the Nexus line bypassing all the long weekend crowds. Was first in line for each of the check points - amazing! Little bit of a delay in ATL due to thunderstorms and lightning. The one real benefit of air travel is that it creates some quality time to polish up a presentation or two.
Presenting at Whitehat Investors Conference on 9/17 & 9/18 https://www.azbio.org/white-hat-investors-2014
and ASU Confucius Institute/United Chinese Association of Arizona event on 9/21
Flight got into PHX almost on scheduled time...
