Five of us loaded up our camp and then went to the Goldstrike Trailhead to leave a car. From there we proceeded up the road to where Ropewiki recommended parking for Motorcycle Canyon. On a previous trip Joel had driven further and said the road might be worse so we decided just to walk the mile on the road.

After the first rappel it was apparent why the canyon was called Motorcycle. I guess someone decided to try canyoneering on one. Hopefully, the person didn’t die as a result.

The canyon had 4 nice rappels and some fun downclimbing.

After we finished the canyon, we headed down Goldstrike to a hot spring. We kept wondering why no one was there since there was a pretty steady stream of people going downcanyon. We climbed in and enjoyed a nice soak before we headed back up canyon to the cars.

A storm rolled in while the car shuttle was being completed. So three of us crowded in the front of Joel’s Outback to stay out of the rain while we waited.

After that we ate dinner at the Boulder Dam Brewington company and then drove to Death Valley.

Came back close to one year after descending Motorcycle Canyon as my first technical canyon (9 Jan 2015). It felt really different this time around, just because of so much more experience with rappelling, down climbing, etc. With better perspective, I think this makes a good 2nd or 3rd canyon for a beginner - no tricky starts but a variety of rappel types, and also plenty of varied down climbing to improve confidence. It's also just a darn pretty canyon, so easy for all to enjoy.

We met up with another group descending the canyon on this day, so ended up with a pretty large group. Good to meet some more of the local canyoneers.

The highlight was seeing a large herd of 10-15 bighorn on the short approach hike.

I don't even know how to describe this experience... My first technical canyon, and my first time ever rappelling! With no fear of heights, and a familiarity with most of the gear from climbing, I was able to just sat back and enjoy the rappels of 90, 60, 45 (+ bonus 35), and 30 feet. The biggest rappel came first, but the most fun was the third because of its setting in a sculpted slot. This canyon was so much fun :y: .

There were also plenty of downclimbs in the canyon that varied in difficulty, but nothing beyond what any of us was comfortably capable of. This is where my long legs come in very handy ;) .

Webbing on all anchors was recently replaced, with not even slight fraying.
From what I read, normal time is 4-6 hours, but with 2 beginners on the trip (and a surprise stop for freshly-made trail pies :D ), it was no shock that it took us longer than that. The experienced canyoneer in our group was very patient and took time to explain each and every anchor and show us several different rope set-ups for some of the rappels. Last bit of the hike out was in the dark - we met 2 groups of guys hiking down toward the hotsprings with more beer than anything else.
