We timed this trip wrong as the 2 day tropical storm hit lower AZ.
We went anyways determined to get some miles in rain or shine.
Poured rain as we left Safford, lightly rained through Tuscon and on to Picacho.
We picked our campsite for the overnight trip, threw on our rain gear and had a very nice stroll along the campgrounds, down the park road & completed the very short Children's cave trail.
Settled into camp and fell asleep to the sound of raindrops all around.
Awoke early the next morning to see the entire Picacho mountain covered top to bottom in clouds.
Packed up camp, then drove to the Hunter trailhead to attempt the socked in peak .......... TBC

JJ3 figured out what's wrong with me. First of all, I've never hiked Picacho Peak. But more importantly, I've never eaten at a Del Taco. :o

That these are the root of all my problems is good news. I had always chalked it up to the bottle of whiskey I drank last night. Thankfully I was able to remedy the Picacho thing today, and Del Taco doesn't seem like it will be too difficult either. And then I'll be normal! :y:

I had no idea how much fun this mountain is. Multiple sections of cables and supports make the rocky climbs much more interesting. We took Sunset down and opted for the previously posted old-man route back, even though JJ wanted to go back up and over. That might've been more fun as the little path next to the road takes a while and it began to get warm out.

Saw an angry and very fat black-tail on Hunter. I didn't get a good photo. JJ might have.

I opted for a blizzard at DQ in lieu of the cherry dip'd. Nice morning. Thanks to JJ for driving and identifying the root of all my flaws. It'll save me thousands in therapy! :)

Well this wasn't in the cards today however an early morning text changed my course. Anyone who knows me knows it isn't hard to twist my arm in the Picacho Peak department. Especially knowing DQ is across the street.

We went up Hunter, Down Sunset Vista and looped back via the train next to the road. Saw a rattler just prior to the saddle on Hunter. No Chuckwalla sightings today.

Always fun hiking with Chumley. Thanks for the invite.

Me and Addie were chosen this year from Roper Lake SP to drive out and help with the "Civil War in the Southwest" re-enactment weekend at Picacho Peak SP. We arrived Friday afternoon and spent 2 nights tent camping in the campground (loop c). Not much shade at the campsites and the constant trains rumbling along the highway throughout the night made it a little  at times but, overall a very scenic park/campground with some great hiking trails!
The Civil War re-enactment was a lot of fun to watch/work and as we left late Sunday night, I was very happy with the whole weekend experience ..... sign me up for next year!
