Continuing on the way to Pigeon Forge drove through heavy fog in the Great Smokies National Park, the only no fee national park, in order to hike in heavy fog at 40° and a brisk wind . Went up via the steep paved path to the tower. Explored a short ways up and down the muddy AT trail ,also searched for the geologic marker which as it turns out was moved to near the parking area due to vandalism plus to boot it’s not readable, still took a picture. Only views were of the kiosks showing the view you imagined was there. Temps still in the 40’s when I returned to the vehicle. I’m sure it’s much nicer on a clear day, even in this weather there were a fairly large number of visitors present. On the drive through the park saw one roadside elk and couple of dozen wild turkeys.

Clingmans Dome Observation Tower is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Appalachian Trail. After a short drive there is a half mile trail to a spiral ramp leading to an observation deck with 360 views. There are restrooms and a ranger station at this location. Worth the short hike for the awesome views.

This "trail" is a paved walkway leading to a historic platform with an unusual spiral ramp approach. But if you have time you can combine seeing the historic structure with a hike on the Appalachian Trail. I did my "section hike" of a hundred yards or so. I wanted to put my toe into Tennessee, a state I had never visited. The Appalachian Trail straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee here. So, after climbing the platform to see the view, I hiked down the AT a very short distance, walked off the trail to the right and down through the trees, and took a pee in Tennessee.

My first visit to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. But there was a big storm coming, and it was pretty cold and windy, and I didn't have sufficient layers. Plus I was going to have to drive back to Asheville in the rain. So, I didn't stay long.

Both on the drive up and back, along the Blue Ridge Parkway heading toward Maggie Valley, I saw a lot of turkeys and a few elk. I don't know if the elk are a different brand than the ones I am used to seeing in Arizona, but they did look different to me. So, I looked it up. They are Manitoban elk, a subspecies that was introduced into the park. Apparently the eastern elk subspecies is extinct. americanforests.org ... ins/

The elk in Arizona (also introduced to the state, the first load brought by train to Winslow from Montana in 1913.)Story about that is here: elks.org/lodges/Lod ... =368

The pups are not allowed on a lot of the trails in the area. We hiked the road to the top of Clingmans Dome, then hiked a spur trail back to the Trail Head.
