A pleasant day spent on an enjoyable canyon loop.

This loop is more a hike with some canyoneering thrown in, rather than straight canyoneering. However, the approach hike is an enjoyable jaunt up a different canyon, with some climbing, scrambling, and problem-solving. Upclimbing is normally not a large component of canyoneering, so that was a bonus.

Not suitable for summer, as you are constantly in the sun with little to no opportunity for even the slightest shade.

Hot and humid ride today. Nevertheless, needed training for a race the first weekend of October.
Not much going on on the trail, as I suspect most families had headed up to higher elevation or Lake Mead for the long weekend.

Trail was in good shape, except some areas of washed-over gravel remaining from recent rains, especially behind the water treatment plant.

I ran an out an back from the Lake Mead Parkway trailhead towards the lake on the RMLT. This is the last parking area before entering the fee station into the Lake Mead recreation area.

A ride around the River Mountain Loop to celebrate autumn and the trail re-paving finally being completed. Okay, so autumn temperatures were MIA, but the breeze was a cool and welcome relief. And, the pavement was complete. :D

There was also an Ironman triathlon going on out at Lake Mead. The timing worked out such that they were riding on the road while we were riding on the bike path, so that made for a good challenge to spur you on.

A few sun cup, Phacelia, poppies, and flowering in isolated patches on the south-facing slopes. Even one Enceliopsis flowering already and others with buds.

This year's ride felt more victorious, although far less fun, than last year.
First, there was the weather - 94 degrees with 25-35 mph winds. And, somehow almost all the climbs on course were directly into this wind.
Then, there were the mechanicals - I did learn a trick for tire repair using a dollar bill, though, so that was useful.

Things started out very nicely, with a ride down The Strip. The police close off north-bound traffic and the cyclist take over the road. Very cool to see! Out to Red Rocks NCA, for a ride around the loop. At the high point here, I was feeling elated, thinking the hardest part was behind me. I doubt I have ever been so wrong. This is when the wind really started picking up. Having a very lanky build, I do not enjoy riding in the wind. Next came 70 miles of struggling into the wind - at times, it was all I could do to maintain 5-6 mph on the bike. The only excitement (if you can call it that) came from my mechanicals.

At least I was used to the temperatures, but many people were suffering from the combination of heat and wind. I have never seen so many people either get carted away by the SAG wagon or picked up by a spouse or friend and drop out.

It felt like a victory just to finish. :sweat:

Tons of chinchweed (Pectis papposa) flowering all over the Red Rocks area. Snakeweed (Gutierrezia sp), too. The ground there is very yellow right now.

Rode to the River Mountains Loop, around the loop, and back home.
Getting ready for next weekend's Viva Bike Vegas.

The highlight of this ride was definitely the three bighorns (1 male, 2 females) who ran across our path. Guess it's that time of year ;)

We also talked to a couple from the Netherlands who are doing a Vegas, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Vegas loop via bike. They had all their camping gear, etc. Wish I had the time for such an ambitious trip :)

It was :pk: HOT for this ride!
With a late start, unpredictable winds, and high temperatures, my plan for a pleasant training ride for the upcoming Viva Bike Vegas turned into a contest of will power. In the end I made it, but not without a few breaks to sit in the shade for a bit. Even had to pour water over my head a few times, which is not something I normally do.

No wildlife sightings. A few bikers finishing their ride as I started and gave me odd looks (always a bad sign!). Only other people I saw were 2 Aussies who stopped me to ask directions and tell me about the bike ride across the US they are doing. Sounds really fun, but it seems hard to balance the timing of not too hot in the desert yet not too much snow in the Rocky Mtns...

It was a windy day for a bike ride, but ride we did.
Instead of completing the entire loop, we decided to turn around at Railroad Pass and ride with the wind at our backs. It was a good workout, but I could do without the gusts nearly pushing me off the bike path.

The slopes near Railroad Pass Casino were ablaze with yellow primrose and purple Phacelia. A few scattered desert poppies to be seen. This is one place where the flowers are always earliest around here, so still early.

I successfully completed my first organized bike ride.
There were 17, 75, 102, and 122 mile options. We opted for the 75-mile route, since this seemed doable to me.

This is a yearly ride, which begins down the Las Vegas Strip. The police close the road - it was crazy to be able to ride down the Strip and not be in fear for your life! We also spun down to the Hoover Dam and through a bit of Lake Mead NRA. It was great to have snack and water stops every so often. Oranges are now my official favorite snack!

Weather was great and the ride was overall fun. I did manage to pass a number of other riders on the long climb out of Boulder City, so that felt like a small victory. :sweat: :sweat: :sweat:

A quick jaunt from the LMNRA boundary to Railroad Pass and back. It felt pretty nice out for the mid-90s. My husband has been riding his bike on the trainer for the past several weeks, and it showed - he left me in the dust!
The Senna was in full flower, along with a few of the creosotes (most are already setting seed).

Got out for a bike ride today since we both had a day off work. Parked off Lake Mead Blvd just before you enter Lake Mead NRA. Rode up all the hills to Railroad Pass. Rode back down all the hills to the vehicle. The downhill is normally fun, but there was a pretty severe headwind that direction today. A better work-out, I guess. :D

Oddly, we saw a few annual plants (Phacelias) flowering.

We began at the Railroad Tunnel trail head and biked the loop cw to get the most relentless uphill out of the way at the beginning.
It was quite humid and we even got sprinkled on a few times. But the clouds provided some relief, since there is absolutely no shade on this trail.
About 1.5-2 miles before the Lake Mead Parkway entrance station remains unfinished and you have to ride on the road. Construction currently on the road make this more dangerous than normal.
Saw only 5 other cyclists all ending their runs as we started - that's when you know you're crazy. ;)

This is a paved multi-use trail good for mountain bikes or road bikes, skating, hiking. Nice views of Lake Mead and the River Mountains.
