Me and 4 friends meetup to tackle this canyon. What a great day, perfect weather. El Cap is holding some standing water some waist deep. So we choose the sport climb at the first rappel. This is a great training canyon due to the fact that the rappels have awkward starts.
So just when you think your alone more people appear. We ended up sharing the canyon with 3 other canyoneers.

Great beginner canyon (me being the beginner)! The rappels are all pretty short and even the 50' rappel is over such a mild slope that some of our group walked down. Beautiful rock the whole way and super cool formations within the canyon to explore and play around on. Apparently the beta mentions wasps...I probably read over this and didn't think too much of it until I was there. The beginning of the canyon is just hiking for a bit and bees were covering the bushes throughout the hike. Once the canyon narrows, and gets really pretty, wasps were everywhere. There were a couple standing pools of water at the bottom of rappels that we choose to bypass (instead of rappelling) because we could see the extraordinary number of wasps flying around the water. The last rappel has a nest of bees in the sand but it is set down-canyon about 10 ft from the rappel and easy to see. None of the bees or wasps bothered us but this would definitely be a bad canyon for someone who is allergic or afraid of getting stung.

After getting experience in 3 canyons with guides and several guided rappels at Papago Park and Lookout Mountain my friend and I decided we were finally ready do an easy canyon on our own. El Capitan Canyon is great for those just starting out with a guide or who have some experience both rappelling and setting up solid anchors. We brought lots of webbing of various sizes and a 150' of canyoneering rope. Because of the length and ease of setup we went down double strand on all of the rappels.

Using the Route Scout app we parked just past the truck runaway ramp right at the starting GPS coordinates on a pullout. There are several and this is a good one, but there's a slightly better one where you can actually turn around just a few feet further down. We walked uphill to the "Road Narrows" sign and began our descent into the canyon. The route in from here was very dry, steep, and slippery but doable. We had to forge our own trail through a massive amount of dry, pokey brush, very sharp bushes, all while avoiding cacti as the "trail" was not at all clear and heavily overgrown. There's a barbed wire fence you have to climb over, but there's a spot with two boulders on other side to assist with this. After a small down climb we were in the canyon. As we picked stickers out of our shoes something snorted at us so we moved on.

There were quite a few rappels. The first rappel could probably have been downclimbed but we were there to practice. The next rappel was into a small, unavoidable pool that was full of wasps so we climb up canyon left and just went around it. Rappel 2 was into another unavoidable pool full of wasps so we climbed up canyon left and did a 60' or so rappel after rerigging the anchor. You'll want to follow the path to your right rappelling down, but don't do this as you're likely to barn door. Follow the ridge and ease yourself into the slight overhang. A few downclimbs later we thought we were at the end of the canyon... We weren't.

There's a fun little cave ahead where you can take photos and a break in the shade but don't dawdle. You've still got quite a ways and climb out to go. We hit rappel 3 and there was and anchor set up canyon left. First you rappel into a little pool area (which could maybe have been down climbed), where, in dry condition, you could set up another anchor under the large boulder. We decided to keep our original anchor which posed a slight problem in that you had to go far to Canyon left to keep your rope straight so we rigged a little pull cord so I could pull it back. This portion was could actually be carefully downclimbed.

Right in front of you is the next rappel. You can bypass this by going through the cave on canyon right, however, there was a swarm of bees in it so we rappelled off the anchor canyon left. After this there was a chute that you can rappel or just scoot down. Finally, we hit a short rappel 5 where there is an anchor attached to a boulder in a rather suspect fashion. We used the original webbing as a secondary anchor, rigged ours up the same way and rappelled down. Getting down was a bit tricky because one side is very slick, smooth stone and the other is a crack, so have fun with that. To top it off there was a completely unavoidable swarm of wasps that decided my bright orange rope was theirs which made retrieving it interesting.

Rappel 6 was easy and the anchor is canyon left, which we rerigged.

The climb out: We hit what we thought to be the jeep trail and followed it right at the fork. This turned out to be a drainage and, despite having 3 liters of water we were out and getting tired. We reached a drain tunnel and climbed up to the road but in such dry conditions we had to scramble up very loose, falling dirt that almost took us with it. Please please please do NOT take this path out.

Recommendations: Bring LOTS of water, beware of wasps and bees, bring extra webbing and anchors as most are in direct sunlight, wear full coverage clothing so you don't get scraped by all the stabby plants in the desert, and find the correct former jeep path out.

Nothing is better than to plan a Culinary and Canyoneering adventure and having it play out flawless!

One of the crew saw Outdoor Lovers triplog for El Cap and brought the idea forward. Since we had recently been in the area I've been waiting for an excuse to go eat more burritos! I planned out an agenda that started the day in Mammoth eating burritos and ended the day in Mammoth eating more burritos. Did I mention that Mammoth has good Mexican food?

We stopped first at Mi Pueblitos! Everyone looked happy with their breakfasts. I really recommend the Green Chili Breakfast Burrito! My only disappointment was that they didn't have pumpkin empanadas. I made due with an apple one which was tasty.

We continued onto the TH and arrived on schedule. We walked the road and then bushwhacked, I mean followed a cow trail, into the canyon. We rock hopped downstream and soon were at the top of the first drop. Many of the drops looked like they probably could be downclimbed but we were there to practice rigging so we set up the rappel. A couple of the guys made excuses about being left handed or right handed and mentioned needing to watch YouTube. So I didn't bother to extend my lecture past clove hitches. But hopefully they'll impress me and come back next time with expert skills including biner blocks using clove hitches, munter mules, and much more!

We avoided most of the water. I didn't want to stress my shoulder so instead of climbing around I went ahead and walked in the knee deep pool. I felt dumb for carrying a wetsuit I never put on. However I would have felt dumber to have needed it and not had it.

The canyon was amazingly beautiful for how easy and short it was. I had not expected it to be such a pleasure!

We finished early and headed out for our next stop on our adventure, Las Michoacanas Mexican Restaurant. I was starving so I ordered Carmelito and a beef empanada. Yum!

The day was a success and we all got home early despite the packed agenda for the day!

Left Tucson at 0700 from the Trader Joe's at Oracle and Magee Rd; great launch spot, perfect for doing a little post hike shopping. Drove to Mammoth AZ for breakfast at Mi Pueblito. Highly recommended, clean , they use good ingredients and good coffee from a local roaster.

After breakfast we headed back onto the 77 past Winkelman to the trailhead. Geared up and headed down into the canyon. We were expecting water and were prepared with wet suits, however we never had to suit up. I did put on my neoprene socks (cold wet feet are to be avoided).

Belinda gave us all a lesson in rigging and knot tying, for some reason both myself and Mike's brains don't work well when it comes to these sorts of demonstrations. I am forever pausing tutorials on YouTube and have never been a fan of the red and black rope diagrams.
We both agree that YouTube is a fantastic resource and that you can learn almost anything on that site.

We all agreed this is an excellent canyon for beginners, and will most like return during the Summer rains and do it again.
Lunch/early dinner was at Las Michoacanas Restaurant in Mammoth; highly recommended.

1st Technical Canyon since September due to Injury. Felt really good to get out there again. Considering I've only been able to hit the Gym a few Times so far, I couldn't have asked for a Better Canyon to get back into it. It's a Beginner Canyon, we had two Beginners along and the Pace was Leisurely...Perfect... :D The Leader wanted to do this as a Shuttle as he didn't want to walk the Narrow Highway, so we took 2 Vehicles... :D We hit it just late enough after the last big Storm that we didn't have to wear the Wetsuits. I haven't done this Canyon before, but I really liked it, so it's going on the Repeat List.... :y:

I led a large group with a few newbies, so it took quite some time to get through the canyon. Very pretty winter canyon! Luckily we only encountered the infamous bees in one section - no incidents. It was a little interesting to see a few bolts up high for climbing sections in the canyon, I never knew that was there. Not very obtrusive though, nobody else noticed them. We had to navigate around one rappel to avoid getting wet, but everything else was just as described. I highly recommend this for only a small group if you have new canyoneers... I had 8 others (5 new) with me, and it took forever!

we parked at the turn off right across the road from the runaway truck ramp then hiked about maybe a mile up the highway to the point were you can find a way through the barbedwire fence and worked our way down to the canyon.there were a couple small reples that are esay to down climbed or buypass at the second down climb / reppel area there is a bee hive by were you are able to bypass it so we just downed climbed it and rigged a hand line for one of our shorter party members .on the last reppel befor you leave there is another bee hive and the canyon was full of bees and of course it had to be the reppel that has a very akwared start so we did it as quick as possible and moved on started the walk out of the canyon .

A part of the state I really haven't been into much so just driving the road in was a sight to see. Pete and I parked his awesome rental car on the side of the highway and began the adventure. We went to the top of the canyon at first to see the views and it was only minutes away from the car so it seemed like a good idea. We then laughed at the fact we went up just to come back down to start to enter the canyon. The area is very interesting, brushy, open and dry at first, then narrow and wet with all the big pools. We were able to stay dry from the knees up which was fine with us. We also avoided the longer rappel as we were able to down climb it without too much trouble. As I was coming down Pete said something like "Oh no" which freaked me out for a second. Turns out a rattlesnake was a few feet away from us in a dry pool I almost climbed into. He was small and the dry pool may be too big for him to get out of? We continued on and really enjoyed the narrows in this canyon. Much longer than I expected them to be which was nice. We did the last rappel and were out of the canyon and able to see the old road leading up. We got on the road and hiked up to the highway and our parked car. When we arrived at the car Highway Patrol was there to check and see if there was trouble. He was glad to hear we were okay and told us that they have too many people come out to this area in rental cars and commit suicide. Something I didn't expect to hear but not what our plans were for sure. He asked about the canyon and then went on his way. Nice canyon to do for sure.

El Capitan was my first attempt at canyoneering. There were three of us, me (Mike), my girlfriend Addie, and our friend BJ. We took a little longer than most people would to complete this adventure since it was our first forey into the sport, not to mention BJ's first ever experience in the backcountry. There was very little water, only two significant pools that we had to slog through, and two other puddles that we could avoid altogether. We wound up rappelling 5 times to get through, the first rap could've been downclimbed, however it presented an excellent teaching opportunity for BJ. We completed our hike on 5/27/11, and the bugs were out in force. Tons of wasps, however, no one got stung to our surprise.

Found a pretty significant trail of use from the parking area to the start of the canyon. One of the first potholes we encountered was avoided by doing some full body stemming. In total we rigged 3 rappels and practiced some buddy techniques to avoid rigging others. Party of two, made pretty good time, but it was still a hot slog back up to the highway in the early afternoon.
