Playing catch up with triplogs. I did this hike with my wife. I was hoping to get a hike in on the new Granite Trail but the wife wasn’t feeling it, so we did an abbreviated version. Since we only did part of the Granite Trail with some use trails thrown in the Midwing Flatland Trail was the perfect descriptor.

We got to the East Wing TH around 8am. Went in on the MUP A Trail for .15 miles. We followed the Granite Trail for about 1 mile and then took a couple of use trails to get back to the MUP A Trail and took that back to the TH. Nice hike with the wife.

Came out this way to find a geocache. This time I got a few pictures of the new trailhead and trail sign. From the trail sign, leaving the trailhead, I was on the Biscuit Flat Trail, then the Burro Range Trail, then a bit of the New River Trail until where I crossed the CAP. I returned the same way.

I saw three bobcat cubs and their mother. That was fun. I also saw a sow javelina and her piglet. I was surprised I didn't see more javelina as they usually herd together.

What a hot day. It was 105 degrees when I finished and I had drank most all of the three liters I left with. There're actually some signed trails out here now and a trail map at a newly made trailhead. I should have taken some pictures of it.

I headed over to the set of mountains on the other side of the CAP canal to find a couple of geocaches. That's where most all of my AEG was made as the walk to the canal and back is pretty darn flat.

I didn't see anybody else on the trail walking, though I did see a few cycling, two on e-bikes.

I'll try to get more information the next time I'm out here.

Short after work hike. Wasn’t really feeling it, but the weather was too beautiful not to get out. Haven’t been out here in over 6 years. Excited to check it because this area is now known as Palomna Preserve and they have created a handful on new trails in the area. I had first learned of this, a month ago, when I did West Wing Mountain. (Palomna Preserve begins just to the north of West Wing). Back then, I checked out the west side of the preserve, where there is an actual park. And though they “talked” about trails, there were no trail maps nor signage for trails. So today I went over to east side of the preserve to see if there were any new trails.

To access this new system from this side you park at Sonoran Mountain Ranch Park. The TH is actually at the north west end of the park. They have made some modest improvements since my last visit. But I expect and hope there is more to come. Currently, when you leave the park the sidewalk takes you to a round platform with cement benches. At this time, there were no trail maps or even posted trail markers at the start, even though there are clearly three trails leading off from the platform. Out of curiosity, I took the most southwestern path and was pleasantly surprised to find trail markers about .25 miles in. I wasn’t planning on doing any particular trail today, so I just did a small loop involving MUP A (multi user path A (clever)), Biscuit Flats and some user trails.

I can see two shortcomings/problems for this trail system. Off road vehicles, the tracks they make and the adoption of these tracks as trails. I saw a couple of fresh tracks on the loop so it looks like motorized vehicles are still getting in. And unfortunately some of the more commonly used tracks have been adopted as trails. Very boring and unimaginative. Especially since there are so many user tracks with more creativity to them. And this leads to the other problem…. all the other user trails that have been created prior to the preserves creation. The preserve is going to have to be very aggressive in discouraging the use of these trails, through good signage and the placement of barriers. And that hasn’t happened yet. I’m all for new trails and I’m happy with the new additions. I still think they are doing work out there so we will see how it looks when it’s done.

Short, after work walk in the "flatlands". Nothing really noteworthy. Followed a fresh game trail. You would think with all the game trails that are out there that I would see more game....I seldom see any. Weather was great!

In the neighborhood so did a quick jaunt in the flatlands. Not much has changed though I did follow a game trail I'm fairly certain was create by cattle. In the past I've seen cattle drinking from tanks at the base of the dam. This is usually during high precipitation. I wouldn't think there would be much there now, but the trail indicates that the cattle were checking it out. The trail was fairly fresh but I didn't see anything.

Continued my gridding of the "trails" between East and West Wing Mountains. Ironically, I lost a "trail" that I had been following on a previous hike. I went back to where it started and it just seemed to fade away...and I know I followed it for a good .25 miles last time. Oh well, where one trail ends another soon appears. Especially out there where there is plenty of recreational activity occurring. Weather was great with some high clouds keeping things nice and cool. Saw a couple of chipmunks and that was it.

Got a late start (after 5pm) so I didn't get a chance to do too much gridding. More of an in and out hike. Got to where I had left off from last time and followed a promising side trail for a bit until it splintered several times over. Did a few of the splinters, but will need to go back. Saw one hiker with her dog when I started my hike. Wildlife was minimum with a distant hawk and a chipmunk.

Returned to the "Flatlands" to get in a short hike and continue my gridding of the area. Most of the side trails that I followed today petered out after a short distance and shortly thereafter I found myself hiking in open desert. When this happened I would turn around and return to my point of origin and then continue further down the "main" trail until I came across the next potential side trail. If anyone ever goes out and spends any time hiking the area they are bound to across a plethora of stone "T"'s which is my way of helping keep track of where I've been.

Short hike in the flatlands. Today was as much about getting some miles in as it was seeing new parts of the desert. Saw 2 roadrunners dining in the grassy park at the TH but otherwise nothing else.

Short hike in the flatlands. A little gridding, but a lot of repeat trails as well. Weather was beautiful. Saw a road runner and a hummingbird.

Beautiful day out as I continue to grid minor trails. I found myself repeating some trails that I had done on previous visits. It's hard to keep track of some of those wannabe trails. No wildlife, except for some blood sucking gnats.

West of East Wing. Didn't we really hike the East Wing Trail, but I did use the parking lot to get the "trails" west of East Wing. The trails are composed of dirt roads, game trails and bike paths that are located between East and West Wing Mountains, north of the dam. Saw one giant jack rabbit and a coyote near dusk.
