Nice way to end a day of off trail exploring in
the Pinal Mountains and antiquing in Globe: checking out the mine that made Globe what it is today: the Old Dominion. After baking in the sun in a trackless mountain canyon all day, I chose this easier ending to my day. This self guided park features interpretive displays of mine history, mining methods, and geology of the area. Most of the structures are off limits (liability issues most likely), but if you're in the area and interested in Globe's history (and there is plenty in this old mining town), then it's worth a visit. Free to get in, and open from dawn to dusk. I wrapped up my day with a Mexican food dinner at La Casita in downtown Globe, and then drove home through the eastern Pinals, Winkelman, and Mammoth.

Visited Gila County Historical Museum that is located in the former Old Dominion Mine Rescue Station and has good exhibitions on the history of Miami-Globe area. Then walked the grounds of Old Dominion Mine that are now a park with some areas closed for access as the mine is still supplying Globe with water. The park is very educational with lots of signs telling about mining technology and showing pictures of the area in the days when the mine was operational. Some of the structures are still intact and also there is a "Bone Yard" with pieces of mining equipment.
Ate an authentic post-hike burger in a historical miner's saloon.

Can't believe with all my travels through Globe that I've never known about this hiking park.
Kudos to Charger55 with creating the page for this one!
I love mining history and was quite impressed with this park, the layout & all the mining equipment displays throughout.
I hit all 9 trails and will be adding this cool little place to the repeat list.
The city of Globe did a great job with this one as well as Round Mountain Park.
Very enjoyable afternoon spent en route to Chandler.
:D

I'm surprised no one has done a hike description for this one yet. I'll get one started but I'll leave it up to someone who knows more about mining and local history to fill in the blanks. This is a fun little park; sort of the opposite of nearby Round Mountain Park. While that one is all about nature, this one is all about history. Several trails take you on a tour of the Old Dominion Mine. Ruins and old mining equipment are everywhere. It's also home to maybe the only artificial peak I've ever summited; and old tailings mound called Buffalo Butte. A mine/ghost town lover's dream, the city of Globe did a good job with this one.
