It turned out to be knee-high, muddy, and ice cold. Not bad, but we were really happy to have brought dry socks and shoes. Left our wet shoes in the tamarix after crossing so we would have them at the end but not need to carry them along all day.
Stripped off layers for the steep ascent/approach. Climbing up in the steep wash was loose soil, loose rocks and boulders, kind-of a mess after last Sept's huge storms. After coming out of the wash and beginning the side-slope portion of travel, following bighorn trails became my preferred strategy. We also met up with a human use trail from time to time, but humans don't always pick the most stable route, so we followed that only sporadically. We eventually dropped into the upper reaches of Cherry Canyon, which greeted us with an abundance of still-green redbuds. This would be a very lovely canyon in spring with the redbuds flowering!
Mostly rappels in this short canyon, with few easy downclimbs. A few very small puddles this day, all easily avoided. Pretty and fun, but not spectacular. I would do it again on the way to Zion, or maybe try Portal instead, Cherry's bigger brother. |

Autumn Foliage Observation Light The redbuds occur throughout the length of this canyon, but were just beginning to change. |
