This is an easy and very interesting hike, starting from the boaters' group camp at Picacho State Rec Area, on the California side of the Colorado River, north of Yuma. (Not to be confused with Picacho State Park in Arizona--no relation). After you've paddled a kayak or canoe all day it's nice to go for a walk. You can loop around and make it a longer hike (use the area's hiking brochure for info), but we opted out.

I have been to this state park many times, but always by boat! Never have driven in there. I always go on an annual MLK weekend trip with a group organized by Helen Howard of Desert River Outfitters in Bullhead. This year I left my car at Fisher's Landing, and realized the shuttle van and trailer were going back to the put-in at Walter's Camp, and that if I had planned it, I could have left my car at Fisher's, and caught a ride back to Walter's, and done the trip over again, solo. I plan to do that next year.

This is an interesting short hike if you are camping at Picacho State Recreation Area. The hike includes a lot of artifacts from when there was a small town, gold mining, a steamboat and a train in the area.

This park is on the Colorado River in California, just upriver from Yuma, and is not to be confused with the one with similar name near Casa Grande, AZ. It's a very popular stop for kayakers, canoeists, and other boaters on the river.

You can also drive on a dirt road to the park, but I have never done that. I've been there several times but always by boat. I'm told the road is usually but not always passable by an ordinary sedan.

I'd like to write the description for this hike, but I suppose I need to go there by car sometime! It's a nice place to camp. There are even solar showers. Plus, there are outlier campsites on the river reachable if you have a high clearance vehicle (or a kayak). I've camped at a couple of those, too: Carrizo Wash and 4-S camps.
