| partners | | For the last adventure before my shoulder replacement surgery I had to choose something that would also allow me to spend the morning with my mom. We had recently learned of this nice short canyon so it was the perfect agenda.
We took two ropes (75 and 50 ft), webbing, and quicklinks. Airkewled also brought a fiddlestick he had made. Our plan was to ghost the canyon as much as possible.
The bushwhack was quite adventurous. I nearly stepped on a rattlesnake. Then Airkewled spotted a Gila Monster! The Indigo was out in force! Soon we were in the canyon and there was a little flow keeping the pools from getting stagnant.
Our first rappel we choose not to use any webbing or quicklinks. Instead we laid the rope around a nice smooth rock without fixing it and made sure that we applied the weight in a way that there was no way the rope would pop off the rock as we rappeled double stranded. Then we just pulled the rope when we were done rappelling. It was nice not to leave anything behind! The pool we ended up in was up to my waist. Not too cold though. Justmike kept demonstrating that being over 6' had an advantage when it came to pools - he never got more than his knees wet. Not fair!
For the second rappel we used the existing webbing and quicklink. The existing setup makes for a difficult start for shorter people. But I was able to manage just fine. This was the prettiest of the rappels. The gneiss rock was quite nicely patterned! Again we ended up in a pool. The walls were hiding several Canyon Tree Frogs!
As we navigated down the canyon, there was one spot where a handline was useful. I actually rappelled on the handline because I didn't really trust my shoulder anymore. The pool we ended up in required me to swim a bit.
Further down did a bypass but then went back up to check out a pool. There was a turtle swimming around in it so I dunked my camera to try to get a better view.
The third rappel had some brand new webbing and a quicklink set up. Airkewled untied it all and stuffed it in his pack and then rigged the rope around the rock and used a stone knot and the fiddlestick to secure it. I left my rope at the top so it could be used to pull out the fiddlestick. Airkewled secured the knot using a carabiner. Then after the rest of us had rappelled he secured the fiddle stick to the pull side and removed the carabiner. Luckily, he knew his stuff and everything worked out perfectly! Maybe someday we will be able to do more LNT canyoneering!
Note: if you plan to do this canyon as we did be sure to bring materials for anchors because there was only the older one left in place.
Since it was my last adventure before my surgery (March  , it was only complete with a stop at Poco and Mom's for dinner and a margarita! |
