However, upon seeing the 50+ cars (probably more) at the trailhead, we decided to go further down the road to see if something else grabbed our attention. We pulled over by a cluster of cars having no idea why they were parked there. Shortly thereafter another group pulled in and we asked about their intended hike. The answer was "up Ding and down Dang" slot canyons. How could you resist a hike with a name like that?? It was about a mile hike in a wash to the bottom of the Ding. Right away we circumnavigated (to the left) a water hole. From there it was bouldering, wading, stemming, partner-assists and finding work-arounds for large potholes. We had a lot of fun and the visuals were phenomenal. It wasn't what I'd really call a slot canyon in that, at least the part we saw, was completely open to the sky. We had set a time limit for ourselves so we turned around maybe halfway into Ding where it was one pothole after another. Other hikers reported that the bottom of Dang had water about 4 feet deep and there's a part where you use a rope to help lower yourself down. Be prepared for water (take dry bags for your electronics), mud (don't wear anything white), and FUN! These canyons are ones to try again. The book "Hiking & Exploring Utah's San Rafael Swell" by Michael R. Kelsey would be useful. |
