Second trip to Raycreation. Really like the upper wall with its 9 and 10 routes, but beware of the sharp rock. We set up a toprope and did Step Class, X-Ray, Jackie's Separation Anxiety, and may have strayed occasionally onto nearby Raytallyation. Check out Squeezing the Lemmon III or Mountain Project for more details. All these have a slight reverse incline, making all of them very pumpy. If you don't pant going up these, you are not trying. Be prepared to leave some skin on the holds.

Easy approach from the Sunset TH. Great day out on rock with Mike and Frank.

Raycreation Area is comprised, according to Squeezing the Lemmon III, of three areas Boulder X, Lower Wall and Upper Wall. The routes are fairly difficult on all, but the area is so easy to get to off Catalina Hwy at about MP 22, considered to be Upper Highway. Turn left just past Bear Wallow and park at the Sunset Trail Trailhead (across the road from the Butterfly TH.). Boulder X has 5 routes 5.4 to 5.12-, Lower Wall has 14 routes 5.8 to 5.12, and Upper Wall has 12 tightly packed routes 5.8 to 5.11+. We choose the Upper Wall since it had the most routes in our wheelhouse and concentrated on the area to the left of the big black stain where X-Ray (5.8+) and Jackie's Separation Anxiety (5.9-) are, but tried (Bob and Frank made it) Raytallyation (5.10) also.

Oddly, the 8 felt like a 9 and the 9 felt like an 8. Don't know how these got the ratings they have, but both are pumpy routes with a good bit of overhang. I did my first 5.9- lead on Jackie's..., yea!! All of the sport routes on both lower and upper are well bolted and well protected, and can be toproped if you don't feel comfortable with the 8/9 lead. We had a great time on these fun routes with lots of holds. If an easy approach, cool temps, and nice shade are important to you, this is a great option for a day on the crags of Mt. Lemmon, especially on a week day. You pass a beautiful raparian area (which is the mostly filled in Soldier Lake Tank) with very interesting 15-foot tall dam on the way in. Good day out.
