Tenaya Peak fit the bill. It was close to Hoffmann and would take a similar amount of time so none of us would have to wait long for the other.
There's a fairly popular climbing route up the northwest buttress, but Tenaya can also be summited without technical gear from the south.
I started at the Sunrise Trailhead, and veered off trail pretty quickly. I saw no signs of a route on the lower part, but eventually started to see occasional cairns. There were some pretty steep sections of sheer granite that I had to find good cracks to feel comfortable about ascending or traversing. But for the most part, I just went up.
There's a flat-ish saddle area about 700 feet below the summit that I knew I wanted to aim for. Once I got there, I found a well-defined route that started up the southwest ridge toward the summit, and later swung around to the south before making the final push to the summit.
The top was spectacular. It's a narrow, rugged peak with a sheer drop on one side down to the lake. The views across the park are phenomenal, and the weather was perfect for clear visibility. I got a text through to 9L for their status on Hoffmann and knew that I would have time to take the alternate route down, traversing across the west face of the peak.
There was a defined route here too, though much more difficult to follow. I think I may have ended up a little too low, but it wouldn't have mattered much. It's a fun route, but I wouldn't want to ascend this way. It's definitely easier on the southwest ridge route I had taken.
This is a great off-trail peak. It's easy to get to, close to other options, and virtually guaranteed solitude. I didn't see another person until I got back to the lake. Just the way I like it! |
