| no partners | | My previous 5 day stats of 6 off-trail peaks and nearly 9.5 hours of hiking, [the majority of which was rugged off-trail terrain], definitely warranted an easy ‘on-trail’ type of peak bag given some recent injuries. However, more never ending drama in my personal life crashed those plans, resulting in a much later than anticipated start. With less than 6 hours of daylight to drive to a TH and get in a good several hours of hiking, I defaulted to my new backyard mountains, the Mustangs, [less than 5 miles / 15 minutes of driving one-way].
Having knocked of the highpoint of the range, I really hadn’t thought about which peak to do next, [and it was literally over 0.75 miles into the hike before I made my final decision]. I’d opted to access the range via a dirt road located 0.15 miles North of the dirt road I’d taken to access the highpoint, and this dirt road panned out just as well. As I approached the mountains, I had almost decided to go for North West Dome since it looked to be slightly easier than some of the neighboring peaks, but miraculously feeling fresh and recovered, I made a last minute decision to head up the steeper slope leading to the ridgeline of UN 6199, and I was very happy with my decision.
The route I took proved to be an absolute blast, the details of which I’ve covered in the Description. The only refinement I would’ve made, [had I known which peak I wanted to bag at the time I set foot out of my vehicle], would have been to start the ascent from the more gradual edge of the ridgeline [SW edge], which looks insignificant on a topo but totally badass once you see it.
Ironically, [while the footing was definitely better than my previous two off-trail adventures], there were still some stretches, [mainly on the mid-lower part of the descent], were it was definitely tricky, [i.e. let your guard down for even a split second and you’re just asking to twist/break an ankle]. Luckily, yet again, I made it back in one piece, without taking a single misstep, and I had a wicked good time. |
