| no partners | | Another short hike after work, this time on a paved trail that follows middle creek towards the Sacramento River. The trail was abundant with blue lupine wildflowers. This trail has some history, it is where the Ruggles brothers (John and Charles) performed a robbery of a Wells Fargo stagecoach by hiding behind a hairpin turn to take it by surprise. They made off with $5000, but Charles was captured the next morning. Six weeks later, John was captured and stated he hid the gold somewhere in Middle Creek. Turns out during this time while Charles was in jail, he had attracted several of the local women in Redding. This caused much resentment by the men, and prompted a speedy hanging of both brothers by a lynch mob beside a Redding blacksmith shop. |
