In Hawaiian, the name comes out as Pu’u Ma’eli’eli (say that three times quickly), aka the Digging Hill hike. This is a great moderate hike to a former WWII pillbox that once protected the east side of Oahu. The trailhead we used was from Temple Valley in Kaneohe; you actually park in or very near the Temple Valley Shopping Center and walk SE along Rt. 83 (Kahekili Hwy.) about 500 feet to get to the trailhead (which is behind the apartment complexes). The initial climb to the ridge is quite steep, but not very long. Once on the ridge, it's pretty easy along a well manicured trail to the pillbox. There are other access trails from the east side, and probably from Heeia State Park. Here is a link to Honolulu Magazine which has more info. honolulumagazine.co ... ail/

One precaution during wet weather: the steep section and some of the other ups and downs would be treacherous regardless of your footware.

The trail is mostly tree covered, with occasional openings which allow one to appreciate the fantastic scenery. The end of the trail for us was the pillboxes, one of which is a two level structure which makes a great place for lunch. The views of the reef area are phenomenal, and you can watch jets practice at the Marine Air Station across the bay. Hiking doesn't get much better than this.
