| no partners | | I had been hiking around St. George, Utah for a couple of days and decided to hike up to Spirit Mountain on my way back to the Phoenix area.
This is a relatively short hike, but it is a tough and steep one. There isn't a trail, but there are some cairns and social trails along the way. I had a GPS track that I was reasonably comfortable with, and I managed to make it up to the summit and back down.
There was quite a bit of class 2 hiking/climbing, and with all the route finding that I had to do, the going was pretty slow. I had read about a class 3 downclimb that you had to do just before the summit, but it turned out to be a piece of cake. It was steep and slippery on the way back down, and I took my time to be on the safe side.
This is a fun and challenging hike, and I was glad to get it done. Spirit Mountain is one of the Sierra Club Desert Peak Section (DPS) peaks, and it seems to be fairly typical of those peaks. |
