I had been hiking around St. George, Utah for a couple of days and decided to hike up to Spirit Mountain on my way back to the Phoenix area.

This is a relatively short hike, but it is a tough and steep one. There isn't a trail, but there are some cairns and social trails along the way. I had a GPS track that I was reasonably comfortable with, and I managed to make it up to the summit and back down.

There was quite a bit of class 2 hiking/climbing, and with all the route finding that I had to do, the going was pretty slow. I had read about a class 3 downclimb that you had to do just before the summit, but it turned out to be a piece of cake. It was steep and slippery on the way back down, and I took my time to be on the safe side.

This is a fun and challenging hike, and I was glad to get it done. Spirit Mountain is one of the Sierra Club Desert Peak Section (DPS) peaks, and it seems to be fairly typical of those peaks.

First off I would not recommend doing this hike alone. I was in Bullhead city for work, and decided to come back to this area. I will hike in the area again, I just wont summit to the top of Spirit alone.
Besides the wind, the hike started out great. After about 60 minutes into the hike, i saw, what I thought was the summit. I was thinking i would be to the top in about an hour. 2 1/2 hours later I was at the top :? There is a lot of thorn bushes and cactus you need to look out for. I am cut up from bushwhacking on this hike. Gaining elevation can be tricky also. I had to drop some elevation at one area. Pictures 10 and 11 are of the same rock formation. The snow and ice added some difficulty in some areas. There where 8 inches of snow in some places. Overall it was a fantastic hike. I am sore from head to toe.
I did start the trail about 2 miles north of the coordinates listed on this hike.

Where Christmas tree rd starts going west, there is an old 4x4 road. The road goes about 1/2mile into the desert. I parked my car and started heading toward Spirit Mountain. I started hiking by following a closed 4x4 trail, im guessing about mile. I know there are shorter routes to the top with less elevation gain. I choose to hike this area. My ultimate goal was to make it to the top, but didnt know if it was possible. About 90 minutes into the hike, I hit a 40 foot drop. Not wanting to go back and around, i started hiking south on a ridge. A lot of cool rock formations in this area. I did run into a rattlersnake about 1/2 mile from my car. The snake was on the closed portion of the 4x4 trail. I was about 3 foot from him when he warmed me of his presence. After a few seconds, he went to hide in a near by bush.

The night life in Laughlin led to a late start. The bushwhacking was taking longer than expected and due to the heat I had to abort. No shade here ](*,)
