Decided it would be nice to get back out to the Mt Baldy area and try another trail. I had done Icehouse and 2 of the 3 Ts before, but wanted to check out Chapman Trail and, if I felt really good, maybe Cucamonga Peak and/or Bighorn/Ontario. Even at 8am, the TH was full and a lot of cars parked along the road north of Icehouse. I ended up parking a quarter mile or so down canyon from Icehouse, which wasn't terrible...

First mile or so to get to the Chapman junction was relatively crowded, then once turning onto Chapman, there was nobody. I think I ended up seeing only one or two small groups of hikers until getting back to Icehouse... Chapman itself was a steady climb, but generally a gentler grade than Icehouse, with lots of switchbacks. I jogged parts of the way up, and truth be told, a strong runner could run the whole way up.

The views started really opening up a quarter mile or so before Cedar Glen, particularly to the west side of the canyon, which made it apparent that the fire has really decimated that area. I could see the switchbacks of Bear Canyon trail, which will likely be completely wiped out with erosion. Bummer, never got to do that one. Cedar Glen was nice though, there is a great camping area that could probably accommodate 50 people, and a flowing creek not far away.

After Cedar Glen, the trail starts traversing along some very steep slopes, and a handful of sections are slightly sketchy, with very narrow trail over scree slopes, with cliffs below some stretches. I don't know if I'd want to carry a heavy pack through this section, but it was pretty fun with a light daypack.

After I got back to Icehouse, I decided to head up to the saddle, but decided against anything extra beyond that. Gotta save something for the next trip.

The way down featured some cruising and lots of trying to avoid the hordes of hikers on Icehouse trail. Definitely recommend doing the loop for anybody visiting the area for the first time.

Third hike of the LA tour was same area as Mount Baldy. We started from Icehouse Canyon trailhead about 6am. It's another popular trail and being a Saturday there was a train of people going up the trail. Definitely recommend a weekday if you can. However, we were stuck with the weekend so made the best of it. On the plus side the trail is fantastic with nice rock work and timely switchbacks especially the last two miles to Icehouse Saddle.

We took fairly long break at the saddle and there were some 20 other hikers at the time. It's wide area so at least room to spread out. From the saddle there are several trails going to other peaks like Ontario, Bighorn, Timber and a few others. After the break we continued on to Cucamonga but with all the other trails the crowds thinned out a bit.

More really nice trail on the ascent 2.7 miles and about 1300 feet. There are good switchbacks that reduced the grade to a pleasant amount of steepness. Just below the summit we missed the spur trail that's more direct so we ended up taking the long way but only about extra 3/4 mile.

The summit was another large area like Baldy but it had a steep drop on the south side so the views were really great at least on that side. Some interesting rock formations also added to the spectacle. Took our time with taking some pics and another good break.

Done on the summit we hiked back down the same way to Icehouse Saddle again. From the saddle we continued about another 1/2 mile to a junction and decided to take the Chapman Trail down which added 2 miles to the hike. The trail we came up stays mostly in the bottom of Icehouse Canyon but Chapman traverses across staying above the canyon. Trail was in good shape but best of all we lost 98% of the people. Great views on the traverse so the extra 2 miles didn't seem to make much difference. Eventually Chapman Trail dropped back down to Icehouse and connected with the original trail about a mile from the trailhead.

Great hike on some of the best trail I've seen in awhile. Definitely would like to come back to do some of the other peaks preferably on a weekday.

Part two of CA weekend, decided to check out the Mount Baldy area. Was worried that it was overcast in the morning, but thought maybe the mountains would be above it all... Turns out the ceiling was around 3k-4k...

Got to Icehouse Canyon TH at 8am with the parking lot almost full, and started up the trail. It's a super highway with a lot of traffic. But it's well-built, and a nice constant grade up to Icehouse Saddle, which took about an hour and 10 minutes to reach. Saw there was still quite a bit of snow on the north facing slopes, so decided to head north up Three T's trail.

Made it up to Timber Mountain pretty quickly, which is honestly not really even worth the half mile round trip from the Three T's trail. Decided I needed to try for Telegraph for a real view.

The difficulty increased a bit, with some icy patches on the north face of Timber that required a bit of caution, and then a generally rougher trail heading up to the summit ridge. Only saw one hiker on the way there. The summit was excellent, with views down the canyon to the SW to a cloud-filled LA valley, and sweeping views to the east of Cajon Pass, the San Bernardino Mountains, and even the San Jacintos in the distance.

Fun trip, maybe come summer I might check out the peaks to the south (Ontario, Bighorn, Cucamonga, Etiwanda).

Last time i was here i was intrigued by a short stretch i did on the Three Ts trail, so i built a big loop using it as the focal point and hitting several high peaks in the Baldy area. just needs a little road walk on the end to close the circle.

battling some leg issues, i hiked the ups (of which there is a lot!) and mostly jogged the downs to move as efficiently as possible.

The icehouse canyon trail is superb and i made good time on the ascent. from the saddle i decided to out and back Bighorn Peak. it is a summit worthy of the effort and i made it there in under 2 hours, so i was happy for that. took my first break there.

headed back to the saddle, then took off on the three ts trail and bagged each of the namesake summits. the first is Timber Mountain. this has a partly wooded summit but still offers very nice views. the next summit is Telegraph and it is quite a butt kicking climb from Japanese Saddle (the low point between the two) to the summit. this was my favorite summit of the day, and i took a good break here too. the last of the three is Thunder Mountain which is at the top of a ski lift. The Three T's trail from icehouse canyon saddle to thunder mountain is spectacular in my opinion. huge open views are nonstop and it was absolutely worth the effort of the loop. right up there with devils backbone for my favorite trails in the area.

from thunder mountain i jogged down the dirt road to baldy notch, then down to manker flat. made good time. final last few miles on the paved road down to the icehouse canyon TH. very little traffic and i jogged most of this too. got some bonus cloud cover for this last part, which kept the temps manageable.

Truly excellent mountain loop in the baldy area hitting 4 high peaks. only saw a few people on the icehouse canyon trail and dirt road from baldy notch to manker. otherwise had the thing to myself.

On my way to summiting the six-pack of peaks in Southern California, I decided on Cucamonga today and so glad I did. Besides sharing the trail with what seemed like half of LA up to the saddle, the hike was great. I really couldn't ask for much more out of a peak hike, Cucamonga delivered. Has anyone hiked Wilson or San Bernadino?

The list goes like this, in order of highest elevation to lowest:

San Gorgonio - Completed
Mt San Jacinto - Completed
San Bernadino Peak -
Mt Baldy - Completed
Cucamonga Peak - Completed
Mt Wilson -

last hike before long drive home and with heavy legs from the previous day. this ended up being perfect and an extremely nice hike!

went up icehouse canyon which is pretty fantastic. only saw a couple people. water flowing in the canyon and big trees of every variety. decent elevation gain but at a tolerable grade.

the short stretch on the three T's trail was simply outstanding. short spur to the woodsy summit that still offers excellent views. chatted with a very friendly guy on an insane training run for an ultramarathon coming soon. he had started at 2 am and was on like his 6th or 7th summit already! good luck dude :)

took the long way down the chapman trail, which was a good choice as it stays high up on the canyon wall longer and offers really nice views over the canyon.

loved this one
