This was my 4th day of day of a 4-day trip day hiking wilderness areas in western AZ. I had planned a climb all the way to the summit of Mt. Wilson. I drove all the way to the trailhead in my Jeep Cherokee. That road is definitely 4x4. Put it in rear locker a few times on the road.

When I arrived at the trailhead the night before my hike, it was pretty windy, something I hadn’t anticipated. I checked the forecast for the next day. Not good; I wouldn’t be summiting tomorrow. In the morning, I checked again, barely tolerable at first light, and it was forecast to go to steady 30 mph by 10 am, and possibly higher by the afternoon.

I headed up the ridge until the sun just started hitting the faraway peaks, and sat and took pictures until I got too cold. Then it was back to the car, and back to Phoenix.

Well, I made it further up the ridge than on my previous trip in December 2019. Parked just off the highway and started up the high clearance Black Joe Mine Road at 2:44PM. It took about 45 minutes to the base of the climb, then I went up the ridge for about another 45 minutes, which brought me to Sub Peak 4154'. There is an adjoining ridge from the south that meets at the sub peak and creates a bit of a cliff band that you need to drop back down and traverse around. I decided that this would be a good spot to turnaround. Great view of Lake Mead and Fortification Hill from up there, as well as very windy. I lost my hat, but at least I got a video. Rough terrain on the ridge, but very doable, but expect it to take much longer than a traditional "trail" hike. Maybe next time I will go just a little bit further :)

I have been wanting to do this hike for a while, and the stars finally lined up right for me to hike it!

The trailhead is about 2.5 miles off of Highway 93. About 0.4 miles in there is a section of the road that is rutted where you go up a hill. This spot will likely be too much for non-4WD vehicles to handle; but if you can negotiate this spot you'll have no issues driving the rest of the way to the TH. Otherwise, you'll have to park there and walk on the road for 2 miles each way to/from the TH.

We started off in a wash for a short distance, and then went off-trail along some ridgelines for the rest of the hike. There wasn't much vegetation to contend with, but the route was rocky and was mostly class 2 hiking/climbing.

The views were great all the way to the summit -- especially to the NW of Lake Mead, Las Vegas, and the mountains west of Vegas, including Charleston Peak.

The wind wasn't bad when we started, but then it got crazy windy as the morning went on -- when I say "crazy", I mean wind gusts in the 40 mph range, and perhaps more than that. If I had been closer to home I probably would have aborted the hike, but I did not want to stop hiking when I was so far from home. A number of times we'd stop and hope that the gusts would subside, but for the most part the wind just kept blowing.

There was one little class 3 move right below the summit, and at the summit we had to hop on a few boulders. As windy as it was, it was not real easy moving around at the summit.

With all the wind, we didn't stay too long at the summit, but the views are great! I did not locate any survey markers, but I did not spend much time looking for them as windy as it was.

It was a little disappointing to see some graffiti at the summit. I am thinking that there is probably some correlation between amount of graffiti/trash and proximity to an urban area(Vegas is only 30 miles away).

On the way back, shortly before getting to the TH we stopped to look at some old mine shafts/adits.

We saw no other hikers, which suited me.

This was a challenging hike for me, but it was fun and had great views. This is a hike that I would definitely do again!
