Heading down Mockingbird Wash, it passes Mallard Cove and ends up at some boat-in campsites on the shore of Lake Havasu, at Teal Point. It starts at the end of a cul-de-sac next to a very fancy home dubbed "The White House." I went with a local hiking group of women from Topock (Golden Shores.)
A couple of years ago it occurred to me that a backpacking trip along the unpopulated south end of the lake, following its eastern shore, might be kind of fun. I have kayak camped all along there. There are a few trails, but even without trails it would be quite doable. You would always have water, and if you wanted a picnic table, there are those boat-in camps all along the way, which see little use in the wintertime. I haven't done it yet, but the idea is cooking. I don't want to leave my car anywhere for days, but now I have friends here who would drop me off and pick me up again.
The Mojave Desert is quite spare and plain when it comes to plant life. Although I love the lush Sonoran Desert, especially around Tucson, I have also come to love the stark simplicity of the Mojave. And it's especially gorgeous when contrasted with water, such as the Colorado River and its reservoirs. Lake Havasu is especially pretty, I think, once you get away from the town, because, unlike lakes Mead and Powell, it never has a bathtub ring. I think they have to keep it full due to the waterworks down by the dam for both the CAP and the Colorado River Aqueduct.
Lake Havasu City Convention and Visitors Bureau has a hiking page. This hike is on there, with a hand-drawn map: https://golakehavasu.com/activity/hikin ... int-trail/ |
