I was passing thru between Arizona and Idaho bringing my daughters belongings back from college and thought I should stop by Horseshoecanyon since I put it on my list. I arrived and trail light during last light of the day and took the two night shots with the tiniest bit of light left in the day, I was tired but glad I stopped for the photos. Got up the next morning at first light and got in and out by 10:30 , no need to wait until cool weather for this hike just get up early, hiking was easy, downhill going in , flat ground in the canyon and a little hotter coming out , just take your time. very nice canyon by itself but of course the target for the day was the paintings, spectacular! any one interested in rock art has to go see this one

Got a nice early start. Visited 4 panels and saw them in varying light as there were a few clouds in the area. Outstanding area, sand deep in spots, a little water . Few others had an early start. On our way out there were many folks ill prepared heading in during the heat of the day. They charge to rescue here.

If petroglyphs are your passion and hiking through several miles of sand another, then this is the ticket. There are some nice areas of shade under the cottonwoods in the canyon but it still is a hot and exposed hike. I guess if you want to see the finer things and the amazing things this is also the hike for you. It is a long drive and a hike I've wanted to do since last year. Totally amazing when you figure that the petroglyphs are at least 2,000 years old.
