After hiking Black Ridge Loop earlier in the day [ triplog ] , we tacked on a short hike to Beeline Ruins. We were only parked ~ a half mile away from the earlier hike, so we didn't bother driving closer to the ruins site along FR 1705, and it's a very easy hike up to the hilltop.

As we approached, it looked like the top was too rocky and uneven to make it an appealing site for natives, and there were plenty of higher ridges and peaks in the area, so it was interesting to see that they chose to build where they did. I wasn't expecting much from the site given its proximity to a mine and the highway, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The top was larger and flatter than it appeared from below, though there were a lot of large boulders on top. This was the first pueblo-style ruins site I've come across that was built among large boulders like this one. The walls were pretty deteriorated, but there were a few pot sherds and a metate. We also noticed some of the flat slabs of rock that others have mentioned in triplogs.

It was also interesting that the structures were concentrated on one part of the hill. There's some kind of perimeter wall along the north edge and some structures on the northwest side, but the rest of the hilltop didn't have any artifacts or signs of structures...just nice views of the surrounding area.

I'd noticed the Sun 3804 benchmark on the map and figured I'd checked that out since it was nearby on a neighboring hilltop. I headed up there and found reference marker #2 first, then located the benchmark buried in the middle of a large prickly pear. I did a quick search for RM #1 but didn't see find one or the azimuth mark before heading back down. This is a very short hike to a small ruins site without much in the way of structures--and what's there is pretty deteriorated--but it makes a nice quick stop to tack onto other hikes in the area or if you're passing by on Highway 87.

Visited this "roadside ruin" on our way up the Beeline Highway. I wouldn't say the ruin is spectacular, but it's a very short hike, so 'why not'? There were some pottery sherds, but no lithics that we saw. Searched around for rock writings, but saw none. It's possible that there are some glyphs, but the gnats were getting rather annoying so our search wasn't thorough.

Well this wasn't the most exciting ruin I've visited in awhile but surprisingly it was one of the more interesting ones. About a year ago I spotted a clearly visible ruin wall on top of a hill just off a forest road. It's near the Beeline Highway, south of Sunflower. Ha. I found it the old school way.. In person. It was summer when I first found it. It was hot and I didn't feel like climbing up there. It's not exactly difficult. Just park the car and walk up the hill. Barely over 100 vertical. I had some time while driving home from something else on Friday so I finally did it.

It's a boulder pile butte with a large open flat area on top. The main perimeter wall is mostly on the west and north edge. A few other random gaps have been filled in. I have to say.. That is one strange butte to walk around on. It's hard to explain and it wont convey in photos. You just have to see it for yourself. Numerous odd small low wall rooms and rectangular rock piles. The dwelling rooms and in very bad shape and nearly buried. You have to look close for the out of place clues to really even notice most of them. The more you start to look, the more you see. The other really curious oddity were all sizes of black slabs of rock that don't exist on that mountain. They were all brought in from distant locations. Some were very large. Other visitors have displayed some of the black slabs on boulders. Many are just where they've been sitting. It's not overly uncommon to find unusual rocks at ruin sites that were brought in but to find so many just scattered around was weird. At least I thought so. Like I said in the beginning. This place is strange. I have no doubt that it's an Indian ruin site. It's just a bit different than most I've visited over the years. It was interesting. I'm glad I finally checked it out. If you're in to this sort of thing, I recommend doing the same. It's short and easy.
