My friend has been wanting to check out the eagle eye for a while. Set up a plan and headed out. Now this was more of a 4x4 trip with a bit of hiking at the end. We approached this different from the guide. We went in from the Frontside. So took 0047 to 0047J. We took 0047J to the end, which ends just outside the wilderness with an awesome viewpoint of the eagle eye from the front. This route also goes through some old mines that are fun to explore as well. We did attempt to reach the arch from the front but I will say we didn't try too hard. Didn't make it that is, but it was still a nice day out in the desert. If you continue on 0047J to the end you will need a decent 4 wheel drive.

I'd had an itch to explore a wilderness that I hadn't been to before, and penciled in a route that looked interesting.

Hidden Tank was nowhere to be found on the way up. We took a sweeping route that made a less than direct approach to avoid some cliff bands that I wasn't sure we could get through. It looks like there are probably a few breaks, and a post in the register indicates as much. But the sloped ridge approach is beautiful and I'm not sure I'd like to miss it.

Barbara and Gordon were here. Surprise! Along with 7 or 8 other people since the register was placed.

From 2806 we headed back down and found an old mining claim on our way to the Eagles Eye. You can see this arch from I-10 and the register there indicated that it receives a lot of visitation. I'm not sure how most people get up there because I wouldn't think too many people would enjoy either the route we took up or the one we took down. I didn't see any other real signs of an alternate use path, though I sort of suspect there is one somewhere.

On the way down we inadvertently found Hidden Tank. Not sure how the USGS mapmakers got the location of this one so wrong. Perhaps they just couldn't find it! It's actually a neat site.

2806 isn't the high point of the range, so I might come back to explore farther south on the ridge. Plenty of signs of sheep, but no sightings today.

I don't think this would ever dry out.
