The original plan was to join the ranger-led snowshoe program in Lassen, but the weather and driving conditions were less than ideal so we decided to hike Yana Trail where it was unlikely to rain. This is a nice hike on very open BLM land with many rocks--reminiscent of some areas around Phoenix, but without cacti. There are several nice views of the Sacramento River and the steep hill opposite the river. We walked past a group of cattle and saw a couple of deer running through one of the fields. It was a bit windy at times, but it did not rain.

This trail was quite different than what I've become accustomed to around Redding. I drove near Red Bluff to hike this trail, which followed near the river. It meandered near some grassy plains and across varying terrain. I chose a good time to hike this area, because I imagine it'd be extremely hot during the summer with no shade trees along the trail. I passed a large group of hikers, one mountain biker, and almost stepped on a caterpillar inching its way across the trail. Several small propeller planes flew overhead, it seems people enjoy all kind of activities in this area--flying, hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
